The Testimony of U.S. Senator George Allen (R-Va.)

Subcommittee Chairman, Consumer Affairs, Product Safety, and Insurance Subcomittee

STATEMENT OF SENATOR GEORGE ALLEN

Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee

Nomination Hearing

February 7, 2006

Mr. Chairman, today it is my pleasure to introduce three fellow Virginians for posts at the Department of Transportation (DOT) - Nicole Nason, Tyler Duvall and David Sanborn.

[...]

Finally Mr. Chairman, I would like to introduce another fine Virginian, David Sanborn of Smithfield, VA who the President nominated to serve as Administrator of the Maritime Administration. He is a graduate of the Merchant Marine Academy. David has impressive credentials and a wealth of experience, both domestically and internationally, but most importantly a sincere desire and vision to promote our nation’s ports and shipping industry.

Most recently, as Director of Ship Operations for Dubai Ports International, he was responsible for expanding port infrastructure and efficiency, while developing successful new lines of business. As Senior Vice President of Service Delivery, a company based out of Norfolk, VA, he controlled cargo logistics and demonstrated his ability to seamlessly coordinate shipping with rail and truck operations. Operating multi-million dollar budgets, overseeing staff of hundreds, and redesigning organizations are familiarities extensive to David Sanborn that will undoubtedly ensure his success as Administrator. I look forward to working with him and working with this committee toward his swift confirmation.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

And maybe Dubai Ports World is one of a very small number of firms worldwide that can handle a project of this size.

Maybe he is and maybe he isn't. The administration has not neccessarily established a record of nominating the most qualified individuals for positions. I don't know.

And maybe Dubai Ports World is one of a very small number of firms worldwide that can handle a project of this size.

Quite possible. Question then is, why all this secrecy instread of coming out on the front end and saying so?

Interesting thing I read online this morning: that the only US company capable of doing a job of this size is Halliburton! Can you imagine the outrage if the White House gave this to Halliburton?

Interesting thing, though. If Congress gets it way, this may end up with Halliburton anyway.

ps. all this presumes the info I read is correct and there is, in fact, no other US company that could do the job.

The whole situation is rotten. I agree, it would have been no better if Halliburton had been given the contract. Is this a "lesser of two evils" set-up?

If you hear something that sounds unbelievable, like Bush selling ports to an Arab nation, it probably is unbelievable and is worth your investigation... Just a suggestion though. :hehe:
