I think that's pretty trite, to be honest.

I don't think there is much doubt that Bin Laden was brought up as a devout muslim and that saw himself as some sort of religious figure. Certainly he presented his philosophy using religious language and had a fairly sizeable following that did the same. That said, he clearly didn't represent the majority of muslims around the world.

What we have from this one guy is a random statement about his being a moderately religious protestant.

The modern world was shaped in part by the medieval, that's obvious.

However... ideologically the western world has generally become more secular in its outlook, the middle east has not. Of course, the west doesn't have the tribalism of the middle east either.
