You may want to give more info to get a complete answer. Such as what country you are talking about.

The police cert is part of the P 3 info that is submitted to aquire the interview date. This means it needs to be somewhat current a that time. Your police may require a copy of the NOA 2 to act upon the request.

See your embassies web site for P 3 info.

Every country has something like Criminal Record, if you don't know, call your local police dept. and ask where can you obtain one. Check with your visa papers that this is the right time to get one, don't get it too early, because it may become invalid after a period of time and you may need to pay twice. Also, check if you can deliver one to the embassy, or you may have to supply a stamped envelope so it will be sent directly to the embassy without your further involvement (I had to go that route).

One thing to remember is that the consulates accept a police certificate within one year of issuance, regardless of what the certificate itself may say. Obtaining one varies by country. In Ukraine and Russia it takes no more than 30 days to get one. In some countries it takes longer. Find out about the country or countries you will be getting them from (the regional sub-forums here are good for that)and plan accordingly. We got ours before we filed the I-129f petition.
