i hate to break it to you gary. but, yes it is different this year. i've lived here for 32 years. i've seen 100+ for weeks/months at a time during the summer & blizzards the following winter. its the local weather each year. trust me..again i've lived mid-south weather for 32 years straight. this IS an exceptionally brutal summer & people need to be looking out for each other....is 'climate change, global warming..etc to blame. NO, i don't think so. its summer 2011...nothing more nothing less. & its brutal this year.

Same here when I was a kid in Texas. Back in those day (which must be ancient!) we considered a heatwave/coldspell just an act of God... Now, in our enlightened age we know it is an act of politicals and business

32 years barely gets you back to 1980. 1980 was the hottest I remember. I remember a guy asking me, (he was a Yankee transplant, there was a lot of that happening in 1980 and it was his first summer in Texas.) "Just HOW HOT does it get here?" On a day when it was about 108. I told him "Well I don't recall seein' it get above 110 or so" In the next few days it climbed to 111, 114, and a few days later 118 I thought he was gonna kill me! As if it were MY fault! That year we had 44 days consecutive, over 100 degrees and more than 100 days over 100 for the summer. The consecutive run started on May 26 and went into July. We had a two day break caused by the remnants of a hurricane that hit the coast and "cooled off" to 99 degrees but got real humid (nice!), then back up to over 100 for a few more weeks. We were working early mornings 4am-12 noon) in construction and that was the year I made foreman. It was brutal hot by 10 am and the last two hours of each shift was purely miserable. By the time we took lunch, at 9 am, no one wanted to leave the shade.

I just remember the temp from late May until September always being around 100 every year, give or take a degree or two.

idk about 1962...my parents hadn't even in met by then. in 2011 its hot as hell & there has been little rain fall here in mid-south w/ no sign of relief on the horizon. idk if you need more clarity...maybe you should read a few of the multiple articles posted online on multiple news sights detailing the extreme conditions....i'm sure if try hard enough, you'll get the exact data you're seeking.. they pretty much all agree w/ me that this is a particularly nasty summer & we need to look out for each other.

It's not just the temperatures, it's the record setting drought. It hasn't rained in months. Cornfields are shriveled and emaciated livestock are being sold at auction due to insufficient water and pasture.

I remember it being this hot when I was a kid in the 70's...I just don't think it bothered me as much. Heck I admit it, I'm getting older. If its not 75 with no humidity, I'm not happy. In the cold (New Hampshire) snowy winter, my joints all hurt from Rheumatoid Arthritis. In the summer, the heat and humidity are just as bad on my joints....lets just say that most of the time, I'm a miserable bi*ch. I will be up front and say I have done nothing buy whine about the weather all week especially when it doesn't cool off at night to be able to sleep comfortably.

A little later that year my freinds all told me it was going to get REAL HOT when the Russian nuked Dyess Air Force Base which we lived pretty close to. Good thing we didn't have YouTube I guess.
