We got our Noa-1 back in May. FI usually visits here bc easier for him to drive 8 hours then me with 2 kids..

We just got back Mon from a 10 day visit to PA. And i really felt a difference crossing into the US this time. Maybe I just had a crabby border guy? Ive never been so questionned. We were at his booth for prob 10 mins. He asked what I did for a living twice...Second time I said im still a nurse...if all of us were coming home together?

He even asked my 9 yr old if hes met FI and if he approves?? Really?? Thank Gosh he didnt ask DD5 anything..

Is it bc of the process? Am i flagged now? Does it get harder to cross?

Hard to say - no you're not flagged, for many people there is no difference when they cross. Remember to have your ducks in a row - you may wish to have copies of your NOA1 or any other documentation you've received during the time you're waiting for the interview. Whatever you can do to reassure the BG that you're not trying to sneak into the US. If you come prepared with the facts, it's generally easier. I assume you already know about bringing ties such as a letter from your employer, proof of current bills etc?

Next time may well be totally smooth.

The major factor---The POE officer. Simple as that!! Some are more strict, grumpy, friendly!! Just because one had an easy/difficult entry last time, doesnt mean your going to have the same thing the next time.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I cross the border at least twice per week and 85% of time the customs officers are very pleasant and nice. I always bring any immigration documents (NOA1, NOA2, etc)that I have as well as recent pay stubs and bills to show my ties to Canada, I think I've only been asked for them twice. Just always tell the truth and everything should be fine.

I had my ducks in a row had my work schedule etc..kids soccer schedules, all paperwork...I just couldnt believe the ?s aimed at my 9 yr old...

Don't forget they're free to be as knobish as they like. They like to catch adults in a lie and asking the child is an excellent way to get the truth.

All you can do is be polite and hopefully they are satisfied. My husband had his truck ripped apart the first couple times by the Cdn border guards when he came up to visit me and then forever after that they barely looked at him.

POE Officers(USA and Canada) are doing their JOBS!! Don't get upset at them----Get upset at the people that try to break the rules, thus enforcing officers to act certain ways! Yes some can get carried away, but maybe you were sending off certain signals that tweaked their interests unknown to you. And kids can be very honest, so hey, why not ask them, lol

Pretty sure I wasnt sending off any signals...I get they are doing their job..I come from a long family of cops actually so I know what they are looking for.:)I use 2 crossings and I simply find one of the crossings the officers are jacka...the other ive never had a problem...

And i get kids will be honest but whether a 9 yr old "approves" completely inappropriate. Alot of 9 yr olds have issues with change and new step-parents. Luckily my DS loves my FI...ask him where hes going? who hes going to see? if hes been there before? when hes going home? but whether he approves...

I was simply asking IF "alien fiances/fiancees" get flagged in anyway...

Again it comes down to the POE officer--what he does!! I traveled monthly to the USA and never had a problem. Everyone has different experiences.

Out of curiosity, what crossing do you usually find an attitude problem at?

And I agree, I don't think that question was necessarily appropriate :(

They sometimes ask some odd questions... I remember the one and only time we had a bit of a poop time getting through they sent us to secondary. This older gentleman proceeded to ask my 3 year old son if he liked "moms husband" My son stared at him blankly for a good couple of minutes then cried for his daddy. I proceeded to tell the officer that he had no clue who "moms Husband" was as to him that is his daddy not to mention he was 3. he would probably still act that way lol

I have a Nexus pass and I generally get asked less questions when crossing the border (usually it's just "who are you seeing" and "how long are you going for"). I don't have a ring yet...would it be bad if I said I'm seeing my boyfriend instead of my fiance? Or should I just mention the fiance off the bat and have them question me?

Honesty is the best policy - nuff said. Remember to bring strong ties (ie proof) that you're returning to Canada
