Dear MENA family,

I was wondering if any of you lovely gals (or guys ;) ) know what is accepted as proof of marriage in Morooco, if you are married in the U.S.? Would just a simple Marriage Certificate do? or would they need an Apostille? Do they need any other proof?

You see, I am originally a MENA dude, and knowing how strict and up-tight the people in Morocco are when it come to a couple staying in a hotel room together, I do not want them to give me a hard time everytime my soon-to-be wife and I go to stay in a hotel room together. I know they usually do not give a hard time to American/European couple, but if both of the couple are from a MENA origin, then they usually ask for a proof of marriage. When I was there the last time, I stayed at a 5 star hotel. When I was checking in at the reception there, I waited for 40 minute because the guy in front of me in line(a Moroccan) was arguing with the hotel personel trying to proove to them that he is married to the lady he was trying to stay with. Also, the next next day I saw the hotel manager arguing with a Moroccan bride and groom (fully dressed in wedding attire) giving them a hard time with the document that they presented as proof of their (new) marriage. The poor bride was so embarrased. And we are talking about an expensive 5 star European hotel here! I do not want this to happen to us.

Beside hotel personel, would the Moroccan government simply accept a U.S. marriage certificate as proof of our (future) marriage?

Thank you in advance.

By law all hotels are suppose to verify your marriage, I stayed at the Hilton in Casablanca with my husband and we were still required to provide our marriage certificate with the passports. Tangier was the same way at a 4 star hotel. I don't think you can get around this, provide proof or go lodge elsewhere is there additude. The one time we tried to acquire a rental property for a week, they refused to rent to us because we did not have the marriage certificate with us. Avoid headaches if you are married provide proof, if you are just dating be ready to pay for separate lodging. The hotels, follow the law because the government penalties for not following it is steep (religion and state issues are combined).

Are you married in the US if so the Moroccan government and hotels that speak English recognize and accept US marriage documdents? You are right if either party is of Arabic background they will require proof.

We've taken our translated American marriage certificate as proof and had no problems. We've also rented an apartment and marriage information was never asked for. That may have been because we were traveling with kids and they just assumed we were married without the documents.
