I don't really feel like answering you, because I think you are too bitter about something to really be objective, but teachers are important, as much as you'd like to downgrade them.

The point that seems lost on Paul from the OP is that if the pay isn't competitive, then we won't be attracting the best and brightest to become teachers. There's truth in the old saying that you get what you pay for.

Become something more than an elementary/secondary school educator then if you want to make money. Go get your masters and/or doctorate and become a college professor who's good at what they do.

Aquire some sort of private-sector skill first that allows you to make even more money as a college professor.

At the end of the day anyone can teach basic math, reading & writing comprehension. Sure, it's a pain dealing with 30 brats in a room at the same time, but there again, you have a choice.

I don't want a teacher that's there to make money. I want a teacher that's there to teach.

Believe you me, there are plenty of qualified people in this country today, that would love an opportunity to make $39,000/yr like this lady in Florida.

I wouldn't mind my own property taxes going up if I knew that it was directed toward a higher caliber teacher. I would vote yes to that proposition. I value education quite a bit...

and by the way, I don't care that much about money - I am a simple person - but if you are going to treat me like sh!t too, you can forget it, and as you can see, I have gotten out!! I'll bring my talents elsewhere and you can have a bunch of robotic idiots teaching your kids, because that is what you, as the tax-payer, apparently want.

I'm not bitter about anything at all.

I just get sick and tired of the entitlement mentality.

"I do this job, so I'm entitled to more than this person."

Well, society disagrees with you. Sorry. Tough luck. It's the way life goes.

So the guy working at the Macy's furniture department is making $60k/yr selling couches. Yup, and that's the way the world goes around. He decided he was a good salesman, chose a job that would make him some money and took it on. Just think how the guy feels selling right next to him that's only making $25k/yr because his sales tactics aren't as good. These guys work nights and weekends just like teachers do as well. Is their job as important? Not at all, but they're the ones getting paid. Why? Because their salary comes from a choice by individuals to make a purchase. As a teacher yours comes from people who are forced to pay money on something they own so that you can have a job. That is a HUGE difference.

Again, you miss the point. What does that say about the quality of our teachers if the best and brightest choose other careers because the pay for teachers sucks? In other words, don't expect to be pampered with things like valet parking if you're taking your date out to Taco Bell. We generally accept a correlation between the cost of things and quality.

and thanks to Unions, that's never going to happen either.

When every teacher is treated the exact same way, with the exact same salary, that's not performance based in any way, shape, or form, you're going to get poor results as well.

Imagine working your butt off at Macy's as in the above example, yet making the same salary as the guy who slacked off/underperformed.

It works in a multitude of ways.

Hey and in Demolition Man, I think Taco Bell had valet parking!!!

Teachers are not sales people. We aren't there to make money - we are there to teach kids. We don't have an entitlement mentality as you'd like to fantasize. On the other hand, from your posts, you seem to think you are entitled to a real bargain in education!

Ha, I never said education was stupid. Quite the contrary.

I'm just pointing out why things are the way they are, whether we like them or not.

Apparently it was for him. He must have learned how to read and write all on his own.

Actually, according to the law in most states, you are up until you graduate high school.
