Confused about Green Cards

Hi Everyone,

It's been a while since I've been back to Visa Journey. I'm VERY confused and I'm hoping someone can help clarify this for me. So I came to the US on a K1 visa, everything went smooth, I got married, we applied for my AOS. Got my employment authorization, green card. I'm working, life is good, praise the Lord.

HOWEVER... We're planning on visiting Canada in Sept and it just occurred to me, "AM I ABLE TO GO?" Are there any restrictions that I have? Also, My GC expires Feb 2012 so do I need to renew my Green Card? I don't want American citizenship so what actions would I have to take?

Please help!

Thank you in advance,

Cindy

You have a 2 year green card im sorry you DO NOT RENEW IT.

You remove conditions on it and get a 10 year green card.

You need to go look at the removal conditions guide because you should of been collected evidence spanning 2 years of your marriage to supply for this process.

Your I-129f was approved in 5 days from your NOA1 date.

Your interview took 67 days from your I-129F NOA1 date.

AOS was approved in 2 months and 8 days without interview.

ROC was approved in 3 months and 2 days without interview.

About the removal of conditions, what Inky said. For the trip to Canada, shouldn't be a problem, as long as it's less than 6 months. They might be a bit suspicious if it's more than a few months without a good reason, but if it's just a short vacation/trip to visit family or something along those lines it shouldn't be an issue, you'll just show your green card along with your passport upon re-entry.

So what happens when the 10 year green card gets close to expiration? And how much is it to apply for 10 year green card? Thanks

All the costs are listed in the USCIS website with the forms.

You renew the 10 year card with I-90 form every 10 years.

When do I know to file for my Removal of Conditions. 90 days before which date? My expiration of GC? Sorry for all the questions!

90 days before expiration date on the GC. Make sure you count carefully too because if you send it to early they reject and return it.

When you get the first notice that says they have your petition it also serves as a 1 year GC extension. Don't lose it!

It will cost you $590 to get your 10-year Green Card.

From then on it will cost you $455 to get a new 10-year Green Card, every ten years or whenever you lose it. So if you are 30 or 40 years of age, you will spend literally thousands of dollars just on Green Cards alone, always running the risk to get kicked out of the country for a variety of reason.

The solution is to surrender the Green Card and exchange it for a US passport, which is what 99.99% of all Canadians do as soon as they are eligible. Those who do not do that usually don't meet the requirements of good moral character, i.e, have been convicted of a crime. If you prefer to spend thousands of dollars on Green Cards instead of becoming a US citizen, you either must have a very good reason for that, or you haven't really put much thought into the subject.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Bob, One has to be in the US for 5 yrs before applying for citizenship. I surmise from your timeline, this period starts when you get your first greencard?

Thanks.

3 years if married to USC, not 5 years. Time starts by the residence since date on the green card. 5 years only from divorce or from another means of getting the GC.

If married to a USC (which you are) and still married to that very USC, you can apply after 3 years minus 90 days.
