inside the suitcase a container of shampoo had been broken and it was all over her dress!

Hmm. My wife packed one bag of clothes/shoes and one bag of cosmetic stuff. No mixing since the cosmetics took a full bag!

The last time I went through Paris was when we had our visa interview. It was during this time I was making a lot of trips to Ukraine and bringing back suitcases full of Alla's stuff. On this trip, inside one of the bags was her wedding dress and they LOST IT! I warned her about Paris! The bags eventually showed up on my porch 3-4 days later and inside the suitcase a container of shampoo had been broken and it was all over her dress! Fortunately it didn't stain anything but I had to have the dress cleaned before she got here.

That's why I always pack stuff like that in ziploc bags. Makeup, perfume, shampoo--anything that has the potential to leak/stain/get crushed... seal it in something leak-proof.

Or just carry really small amounts in your carry-on bag. There's no need to take a whole bottle of shampoo for a two week trip.

Buy locally. Almost anything we "need" can be purchased after arrival.

I know for women it's a little different but the basics are available just about everywhere in the world.

Si, man (sigh, man). Something really slimy leaked in my shaving-kit -- and it was on the very TOP of the kit, so everything beneath got slimed. I spent a whole out-of-town evening trying to off-wipe everything, and I bought a box of Ziploc bags in which everything is now ensconced, zip man.

Well, if I'm travelling for a long enough time to actually check luggage, then I'm not going to waste money on buying new toiletries/makeup wherever I go. I would have to buy:

-shampoo

-conditioner

-styling product

-mascara

-eyeshadow

-eyeliner

-foundation

-blush

-moisturizer

-cleanser

-etc. etc.

While waiting for the visa, I made 6 trips to Ukraine. I put a regular suitcase inside a huge suitcase and then my small duffle inside that. When I came back, the two bags were full o' stuff. From books, to clothes to cosmetics to shoes. It was not for a two week trip, it was the process of moving here. Granted she could have left all that stuff there and bought more here, probably cheaper, but you know they have to have their favorite stuff and Alla has still accepted the cosmetics we have here as being worthy. She will buy a bunch of that stuff when we visit in a couple weeks, like she always does. She will also get a year's supply of contact lenses and a bag full of stuff from the Apteka

6 of each if you were Alla.

It seems counterintuitive to me to buy cosmetics in Ukraine instead of the US. In Russia, at least, the brands are largely the same, but with 50% price difference. Cosmetics, too, are "almost free" in the US.

There is a brand name face cream she absolutely loves, it is quite expensive and she cannot find it here or in Montreal. Don't even ask me why it is better. It is probably not something you use...yet, but you might in 20 years or so. As far as other stuff, yes, she also brings the "almost free" cosmetics here to her friends as gifts

Boy do I wish that was the case. We have several thousand dollars worth of cosmetics in our house right now.

After five years of being here, she is starting to accept the occasional $5 lip sticks instead of her usual $50 stuff.

She's trying to find Camay and or Palmolive bar soap. Abundant in Ukraine but not available in the chains here. Right now, Dove is the only alternative for her.

well, if you guys were in Russia, double the cost of everything. I pay 8$ or something for OPI nail polish there, 20$ here. :(

Check the dollar stores, both the chains and the independent ones. Camay is available in Mexico, if you or anyone you know has a chance to go, si man.

there was an article about Camay in the New York Times... apparently lots of old people have been using it for like, fifty years and are now freaking out because it's not in stores. The link above has it; it's a mail-order company full of hard-to-find things for the older generations.
