The study - carried out by a man - concluded that men's IQs are almost four points higher than women's.

British-born researcher John Philippe Rushton ... says the finding could explain why so few women make it to the top in the workplace.

He claims the 'glass ceiling' phenomenon is probably due to inferior intelligence, rather than discrimination or lack of opportunity.

The University of Western Ontario psychologist reached his conclusion after scrutinising the results of university aptitude tests taken by 100,000 students aged 17 and 18 of both sexes.

A focus on a factors such as the ability to quickly grasp a complex concept, verbal reasoning skills and creativity - some of they key ingredients of intelligence - revealed the male teenagers had IQs that were an average of 3.63 points higher. The average person has an IQ of around 100.

The study was done on the SATs if I've heard correctly. This would assume that SAT scores are indicative of IQ.

I don't necessarily think that's the case.

All the extra neurons in a man's brain are figuring out where the remote control is and the overloaded

Exactly IMO no study on 'intelligence' carries any weight. Intelligence comes in many many forms- including emotional, spatial, logistical, musical.....

PLUS, a study on the gender differences in only completely valid if their environmental influences are under complete control throughout their lives (which is near impossible). It can be argued that men and women are treated differently and are exposed to variable opportunities which increase or decrease their performance on the studies 'tests'. While I do think intelligences are a lot to do with genetics, 'test' performances are most certainly not.

that IQ tests were "biased towards men" and therefore could not be used to quantify

But wouldn't these "smart genes," if, in fact, intellect was selected in males by prehistoric females, be passed equally to female off-spring? Also, it would seem to me that if the female of the species recognizes the intelligence of another being, and are guiding evolution in a way that males are not, this would reflect a high level of intelligence in them as well. Finally, the need to survive and invent ways of doing so, imo, would be valued equally in males and females, so it would have been in a male's best interest to select the cleverest female he could find, as it would have been in a female's best interest to select the smartest male.

I believe, and always have believed, that generally speaking people expect less of girls than they do of boys -- many girls are nurtured from birth to concentrate on their physical selves or on the needs and wants of others rather than on their own intellect, even if that emphasis is subtle. One of the best examples of this I can think of in my own experience was when my cousin and his wife gave their 3 year old daughter a vanity set with fake cosmetics and they gave their 2 year old son a coloring/writing desk. TV and music certainly promote the idea that a woman needn't use her talents to become successful -- having a beautiful body and, with it, attracting a rich man, is more than enough. These influences are felt the most, imo, around the age of this study's focus-group.

It IS interesting to note, however, that nowadays more women attend and graduate from universities in the US than men do:
