Sis Maria, her old ID should suffice -- its purpose is to prove that you are who you said you are and match the photo and name on her greencard. BUT, it would be so much better if she can find a way to update her address at the DMV.

I should've looked at where you are from... I guess in your case it might help. We lived in Huntsville AL before moving (twice), and I have good news for you... your friend can do the address change by mail. It is what we did. I am assuming she is in AL as well.

All she needs to do is send the information they request (checkout the link below - Address Change section) and send the letter to the address with that info. If she does not want a new DL with the updated address, then she doesn't need to send the $18 fee and she can keep her current DL. She should probably photocopy the letter and certify it (or deliver confirmation) that way she can present it to the IO and show that she has done what is required by the law.

Hope this helps!!!

You are really a good help, i'll let her know.

As far as I know, AL issue a temporary paper ID when you renew you state and DL, thats why im convincing her to go there and do it. They'll get the old one and punched a hole but then she'll have this temporary id good for a month, but i'll tell this option to her...thank you so much!

That's correct for renewals. But address changes are handled differently. She can only change her address in the system and keep the same DL or send in a check for $18 with the letter and they will mail her the DL with the new address. My wife and I didn't pay and had the DL with the old address for a while knowing that we are going to move to a different state... it worked out wonderfully.

Your friend has options... choose the most convenient!

Filed: Citizen (apr) Country: Colombia
Timeline

Stepdaughter received a yellow letter from the USCIS telling her to bring in her state ID or drivers' license. Made sure she had it, but the St. Paul office never wanted to see it.

Maybe its because they realize the only way she could have received a state ID or her drivers' license when she turned 16 was to show her green card. That is a photo ID with her date of birth on it that proved her age, photo ID, and and birth date.

When she came out of her interview and told me a decision cannot be made at this time because her IO wanted proof she paid her two old traffic violations. I instantly replied, why didn't you show him your drivers' license. If you don't pay your fines in our state, the first thing they do is to pull your drivers' license until you pay your fines. Go back and show that to him, she said, lets just go, I will get that proof. What the hell, she is over 21, we left.

So what's with the USCIS on this issue, a state ID or a drivers' license is only a secondary form of identification, don't they trust their own green cards that took forever to get with tons and tons of proof? Sometimes I wonder about the caliber of people we are dealing with.
