It's PC to be anti-smoking.

For me it's personal. My father died of lung cancer that spread to his brain when I was 14. He was just 45. So yes, I'm about as anti-smoking as you can be. Not because it's "fashionable".

But go ahead, smoke 'em if you've got 'em. Just don't do it near me. Don't expect any sympathy when you get sick either. You've had ample warning, and ample opportunity to quit.

Hmmm... it was just a funny pic :P no need to get all bent.

Sorry to hear about your dad.

Smoking is a behavioral issue which some argue increases health care costs. There are loads of behaviors that people have which can cause health problems.

It could be argued, for instance, that homosexual behavior causes health issues. But you wouldn't see a similar graveside scene over two homosexual lovers.

No I'm not anti-gay or lesbian. Yes I smoke. Readers may consider my two examples above to be unrelated. I don't think they are.

All I'm saying is that it's often considered 'OK' in today's culture for us to be minding other's peoples personal business and private lives, sometimes to the degree of legislation. I just don't think that's what a free society should be about.

i agree that it is a behavioral issue to a point... where i find a difference in your comparison is smoking effects more than just the person who chooses to light up... therefore infringes on the rights of others... in homosexual relationships, its 2 consenting adults... therefore, they are taking the risks for themselves alone

i dont want to mind other ppls business... i have enough to worry about minding my own... smoke in your home if you like... smoke in your car if you like... why should i care (except i like you, becca, and would like you to be around a little longer than smoking might allow)? where i do feel i should speak up tho, is when it affects my daughter... myself... my unborn child

my husband is a smoker... and i do worry about his health... i want him around to see his child grow up and graduate and have a life... but its his choice... i wont tell him not to do it... but i do ask that he do it outside the house, away from me and our daughter... and he does so without complaint, even on a rainy and cold day, because he understands that its not OUR choice...

ultimately, a free society means that you have to take the responsibilities along with the freedoms... therefore, if in order to pursue your happiness, you feel you need to drink a bottle of tequila... go ahead... but dont get in a car and drive, therefore exposing others to your behavioral issue

"True love is falling in love with your best friend,

and only then, will you find the meaning of happiness."

Until they do it again with another partner and pass the bug on. And the $$ costs affect us all.

Sorry but as soon as your smoke leaves the end of your cigarette you have taken away my rights to not smoke. Plain and simple. If people would wear a device and completely contained the smoke so that only they had to breath it I would say great smoke 100 packs a day....

I still don't see how it's PC to be anti-smoking. It just makes sense to not smoke.

me either...

I never started to smoke because I just thought it was nasty. My mum had smoked and even at a very young age I gave her hell about it being nasty (not knowing all the health issues of course). She stopped because she wanted to be healthier and she knew how much it bothered me. She celebrated her 30th anniversary smoke-free this year and I'm so proud of her and more so, I'm just happy to know she won't die because of something she could have prevented. She lost a best friend, close cousin and sister-in-law all to lung cancer and all within a few years and it breaks her heart that she lost them but she also feel so fortunate to have given up smoking when she did.

In a strange way I'm glad my mum's smoke bugged me so much, because I've carried that with me always, never once thinking...oh, this might be something fun, glamorous or cool to do.

The picture is more poignant than funny to me.

That would certainly kill the mood. :help:

What's this mean? Are you implying that homosexuality is a disease? A bug to be passed on?

Or are you referring to some STD that only homosexuals can get or pass to others??

AND...where does it say that homosexuals WILL get a disease? They can protect themselves, just as heterosexual couples can. I don't think you can say the same about smokers... can they protect themselves against smoking related diseases AND still smoke? If someone figures that out, they'll make a fortune.

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.

I think this is a great picture! And, having grown up listening to parents hack their lungs out every morning before they could speak because of their smoking habit my brother and I chose never to smoke. My father gave it up in time. My mother gave it up but not before she developed an emphysema type of asthma due to smoking and was never able to breathe freely again the rest of her life. Her 3 sisters and her mother, my beloved aunts and my grandmother, died horrendously painful deaths from smoking-caused lung cancer. I spent most of my childhood sick with respiratory afflictions that stopped and never returned after I left the second-hand smoke environment ,and even now, in a smoke filled room my throat swells up and within 5 minutes I can't speak and have trouble breathing. Disliking smoking isn't 'politically corect' for me; it's very, very personal.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Reading this just made tears well up in my eyes. I'm not joking. :( I'm sorry about your mom. (F)
