Marlene says it tastes good if you can get past the smell

I'll never get close enough to find out

Similar comments have also been made about "Bombay Duck", a dish of dry fish popular in coastal Maharashtra (dunno if they renamed it "Mumbai Duck", so I'll stick to the old name). Author (of "The Great Cities: Bombay") Dom Moraes stated that his fater would always carry an eau-de-cologne-saturated hanky, holding it under his nose when going through an area where the fish were drying (having actually smelled it during my 8 years in Mumbai, I believe it)--though he could still enjoy the already-dried fish in a curry.

(FYI, the incidents related by the junior Moraes took place in the 1950's; the senior Moraes had seen combat during WW2, to really throw some perspective on it)

Kanafah... ick.

What is it?? :D

Oh. Guess I should've elaborated. Kanafah is a very popular Middle Eastern dessert, made from a soft cheese covered in nuts and a sticky sweet syrup. A "normal" serving covers almost an entire dinner plate. It's so rich and so hideously sweet that I can only eat about 2 or 3 bites before I want to puke. But they absolutely LOVE it in Palestine and Jordan.

Sounds a bit like a (perhaps oversweetened) cheesecake--but using a "serving" of the whole (rather than a slice) which is quite hard to swallow.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I was expecting this to be dominated by English people, and I'm pretty much right. ;)

"Get yer haggis! Right here! Chopped heart and lungs! All boiled in a wee sheep's stomach! Tastes as good as it sounds! Good for what ails ya!"

huh?

Why would English people say that? Haggis is from Scotland not England.

:sigh:

For those who are put off trying Haggis, two things:

1) The supermarkets' haggis is usually far inferior and tends to be made with pork rather than sheep, so try and get it from a recommended butcher shop.

2) There's always vegetarian haggis and a lot of Scots themselves eat this instead.

hot tip: sprinkle a little whisky (note the Scottish spelling) on the cooked haggis, especially Glenmorangie. yum.

everything is better with whiskey :) except maybe vegemite. To me there is NOTHING that will make me like it...Stewart tried EVERYTHING. He put a little on toast and then COVERED it in honey...ugh. He then tried peanut butter. UGH then he tried to SNEAK it on my toast but I tasted it!! I can't be fooled.

FLACZKI

CZRNINA

Hm... I used to didn't like TRIPE but since my dad owns a company in Poland that makes Triep's soup I started to eat it and it is not that bad. The soup itself is tasty but sometimes trepes are to gummy so I don't eat the meet.

But for many of you (and also Polish people) "Flaczki" = Tripe's soup might be much better than CZRNINA ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czarnina ) but made by my mom it can be even good ;)

(my husband never wanted to eat it couse of the old Polish tradition of the soup but now since we are already married I bet I will make him to try it ;) )
