I wanted to reach out to the community to see what type of best practices there were upon a K1 visa entry into USA.

It is easy to understand that we will first need to get my social security number and card, get married and then get the name change on the social security card. Beyond that and applying for AOS, what other things are necessary or good to do upon the first couple of months arrival?

Open joint bank account(s)?

Change household bills to reflect both myself and husband?

Get on both medical, dental, household insurance policies?

Get a state ID card (non DL).

Can I start school or obtain a drivers permit before the AOS?

What other documents or processes should we look to do?

There seems to be quite a bit of administrative "stuff" that needs to be accomplished so we are looking to resolve and not wait until the last moments. Thank u so much for any input you may have.

:)

With regard to your questions about attending school or getting a drivers permit..... each State has different residency and ID requirements for the licenses. You'll need to check the official DMV site for where you will reside. Ditto with educational institutions.... each school has their own requirements so you will need to check with them.

I'm going to move your thread from the K-1 Process to General Immigration Discussion. You'll get more relevant answers there.

Whoops. I tried to post and see mili has moved your thread already. Sorry about the double move. :(

With regards to school, you would have to check with the school you are interested in.. my school let me apply pending a GC but in order to enroll for classes I had to have it already :)

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png
