Hello everyone,

I am sure this has been answered hundreds of times.......I have a question. I have a Blackberry Tour 9630 that I am no longer using. It is an international phone and it works in VN. I want to airmail it to Thu because I got a new phone.

Am I allowed to ship electronic devices (cell phone) to VN without issues? If so, what taxes could I expect to pay? If anybody is going to VN (HCMC) soon, would it be ok if I had you take it with you?

OP - I sent my 1st Gen IPhone to my fiancée and it cost about $40 to sent it.

However, when the phone was delivered my fiancee had to pay a $20 tax on it. This is based on the declared value I suspect.

I used USPS and it's pretty reliable.

Did you use USPS Express Mail International? I heard that one is about 1 week shipping time. Did you also put any insurance on the package and how much did you put for declared value on the shipping paperwork?

The taxes on items all depends on how much the item cost. If you wanted to save money why don't you just go over there and give it to her personally.

So I gotta spend over $1300 to go and give her the phone? Sounds kind of expensive don't ya think :lol:

No seriously, I won't visit her until December. I just figured, if somebody from VJ was already going to VN that maybe they can take the phone for me. I have done this a lot for other people so it's no big deal. I think I know what to do now. Thanks for the help guys :)

Every country is a little different on what they charge for import duties. Generally if the declared value is less than the taxable amount and it is sent as a gift then you will be ok and not have any import taxes. You should check what these limits are for Vietnam. Global Express can get a package from Tulsa to western china in about 5 days and it has a tracking number. Priorty takes about 10 days but there is no tracking number so the chances of it getting "misplaced" along the way are much higher.

I used USPS and the cost came out to be the same, the only diff is I sent her an Iphone 3g.

we talked about the duty a few times in the past.. it can be 50% for electronics and Fed ex will require an invoice for valuation. best bet to find someone going over

I made the mistake of telling relatives when I will return. Now they all have lists on stuff to ask me to buy to bring back for them. My cousin even asked me to buy his friend a white Sony PSP - and I've never even met that guy. That really ticks me off so I'm going to tell them I'm not bringing anything back for anybody which will piss them all off.
