I feel like I always have questions, and the more I read - the more I question. Of course, I have been reading posts, and now I have found myself a wee bit on the confused side as to how we are going to deal with this one or if this one will even become a problem (I have read on other posts that the embassys are pretty picky). My fiance is self employed. He can prove income through his taxes, but I am not sure what to do if a letter from employer is necessary. Also, will I have to prove income? Have not filed taxes in five years (was living in Ireland and did not work). I am trying to make sure that we have all angles covered and no surprise.

Thanks.

As far as the letter from employer goes, the instructions on I-134 say that the sponsor should submit the documents "as appropriate". So, if self-employed, it's understandable and expected that the sponsor's not able to provide a letter from employer.

The instructions say the *sponsor* has to prove income/financial resources to support the petitioner; if he isn't above the 100% poverty guidelines, then a co-sponsor would be needed.

Also, I've heard about self-sponsoring for petitions going through London. You can do some research on that.

I second Mew's suggestion to look at self-sponsoring, if it's possible.

It sounds to me as if you are asking about a letter of employment from the non-USC. You, as the petitioner, are the one who needs the income, not your fiance (unless something like "self-sponsor" works). You need the tax forms and bank statements and letter from employer, etc. If you aren't working now and don't have those things, then you will need a co-sponsor. Even with a co-sponsor, you still need to fill out an I-134 form and turn in whatever supporting documents you have, for the interview.
