Hi, my fiance just got her K1 visa the other day  and she is interested in going to school once coming here.

I was wondering what would be the best way to go about getting her into a school. Also how long it would take.

Thanks for your help. :)

Child bride?

I only know about Elementary School, just went to the office and got the forms and filled them out. Probably similar for High School. Needed some vaccinations, but would probably be OK with the ones needed to get into the US in the first place.

Jeez Boiler, you obviously haven't been in the USA long enough to know that "School" is also used to mean "University" here! Perhaps you should pick up the lingo before jumping to conclusions.

All you have to do it apply. For most schools she will need SAT scores, and since she is foreign she will probably need TOFL (test of english as foreign lenguage).

Good luck.

my husband (from the UK) had to take the TOEFL, if you can believe that! he was like, 'Um...we invented the language!'

he did not have to take SAT's or ACT's...but he did have to take some placement testing, because in the UK they don't have a "diploma" when they finish high school like we do in the States.

interestingly, we were able to pay in-state tuition for him...not international student rates...because we were married.

Yeah, can you believe that? My mate had to do the same thing. Doesn't TOEFL stand for "Test of English as a Foriegn Language"? Only in America would they think someone from the UK has English as a "Foriegn Language"! Although when I worked in Ohio I do remember someone commenting that I "spoke good English for someone from England".

Well you do get certificates when you finish school. I have a bunch of them. They're broken down into individual subjects.

I think you got lucky there, nice one. I had a hard time persuading my wife's University to charge her in-state rates and she's the USC.

Jeez Boiler, you obviously haven't been in the USA long enough to know that "School" is also used to mean "University" here! Perhaps you should pick up the lingo before jumping to conclusions.

English is the language of the US.

The President said so.

Did he offer to take the class?

There was a lady who moved to California with 6 year old daughter, they wanted to put the daughter in the the TOEFL stream!. She had a hell of a job sorting it, she would have been with children who only spoke Spanish.

Actually there are High School Diplomas in the UK, my stepson stayed with me when my then Fiancee went back to the US to finish High School at the American School in Cobham.

My guess is that the equivalent would be 5 'O' levels. I may be setting the bar too high.

Far too much fun taking the piss out of Americans.

I said "lingo" not language. Lingo is "the vocabulary or jargon of a particular subject or group of people" - in this case, Americans.

PS - I attribute to tiredness that I may have missed the fact you were taking the piss. ;)

Greetings!

1. Gather all documents from previous schools.

- high school diploma

- transcript of records.

2. Have the above copied and send it to ECE for accreditation.

note:

course to be credited to new school

3. Look for a school that offers the program that you want.

4. Admission

5. Enroll

6. Placement test ( reading ,writing and math)

7. Meet advising counselor

8. registration

note: I do wish that she has a green card before she starts studying, why? that way she wont be billed under international student, also green card holder is qualified for FAFSA grant etc.

Also, Must know where to studat way in advanced prior to accreditation, as most o the schools would want the ECE to directly send a copy from them to theri school of evaluation.

If one is from China and the medium of instruction is not in English then one must take test for english .

griffin

p.s dorry for some typos

opps sorry..he he he1

All my husband had to do is apply. Oh, and when they asked him to take the TOEFL, he just handed them copies of his GCSEs and A Levels in English -- that seemed to clear that bit of red tape up.

My fiance was accepted to college prior to returning to her home country. They had admisions people who specifically handled "foreiegn students" and were very helpful. She had to take an english test (not TOFL) and had to have proof of support as well as her high school transcripts (grades). SAT's were not required. Your process should be similiar just call admisions at the school you are interested in and they will guide you through the process.

I didnt have to take any SAT's, al depends on the school. At the college I'm attending I had to take a English and math exam. Was pretty basic.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Boiler,

Now look what you've done - you'll have the moralists attacking poor AdamC on the un-supported assumption that he's a pedophile (perhaps worse yet an underage pedophile).
