I'm not sure how long it will take to get results. I have to get the results of my ultrasound before I can get a referral for a biopsy. The ultrasound probably won't tell us anything but it needs to be done before I can get the referral to a specialist. My doctor is really great and I know she will try to get me some results as soon as possible. But it still might take a month or so. I'm so anxious and keep having panic attacks since this has been worrying me for over a month now. In addition I'm defending my MSc thesis in just over a month and my fiance deploys shortly.

Thank you all so much for your support and advice!

Go ahead with Appointment, do the medical stuff and deal with the results as appropriate. If you need to extend the time to leave for treatment request that from the Embassy. As your embassy is generally pretty swamped I would try to stick to original timeline. If you can arrange marriage immediately after arrival you will be covered on your new hubbys medical insurance immediately if he is active duty and can resume or complete treatment here.

Not true you are not covered immediately. It takes 1-2 months after you apply for the medical to be covered by it. Not all the plans cover everything either AND you have to be cleared by the doctors in the US to get the treatment, you cant just go and get the treatment. That means waiting in the US for doctors to see you and decide to give you the treatment you need and then getting tricare to sign off on it can take months.

I went through this myself already.

Health coverage in the USA can be a bit confusing. Few years ago my wife brought home a book that was over an inch thick, and from that one is suppose to make a choice of what type of health plan you wanted. It can be fairly frustrating, lol Then with some plans you have to only see doctors that are IN network! A good example I have is our dental insurance-------I called up the dentist and asked if he took Delta dental insurance. They said yes! So I thought I was good to go! NOPE!! Sure they took it, but since they were not in network, their was no cap on fees, so thier bill was $$$$$$. Needless to say, I found a IN network dentist, thus they can only charge so much, was a lot less!! I think my work cost me just over $1000 out of pocket, while that first dentist would have cost me close to $5000 out of pocket! I was added to my wife (federal employee)insurance very quickly, but that was back in 2004. You really need to sit down and google the different types of insurance types, ie HMO, PPO, POS, etc etc Best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I believe you are covered immediately, it may take a month or two to get in the system.

This is a military family they really only have Tricare as an option unless they pay for a private policy.

My fiance is indeed military (he's a pilot in the AF on active duty). Therefore we will be enrolling in Tricare Prime. I'm pretty sure I'm covered as soon as we get married and go down to the enrollment center. Please correct me if I am wrong in saying that Tricare covers all pre-existing conditions and you can enroll with a marriage certificate, birth certificate and passport (you don't have to wait for a SSN). My fiance spoke with someone in the office and that's what they told him but I tend to be skeptical of things people tell us. I would hate to be stuck in a terrible situation with no insurance.

I just got my ultrasound results and it looks like I might have a thyroid problem which is causing all the swollen lymph nodes. It's totally treatable. I'll know more when I get the blood test results but at least I have a little hope now. Thanks so much for the support!

Hoping for the best. Your best bet is to contact the insurance company directly and ask them, and see if they can send you something in writing

I have had my wife on my medical coverage since we got married in 2008. No SSN needed. A marriage counts as an "life changing event" and opens the enrollment option on almost any plan. The government plan should be the same, as they are usually pretty decent. I would proceed with your interview, plan the wedding and seek US treatment as soon as possible.

You would not be waiting a month to see a specialist for potentially life threatening nodes on your neck. Canada can be so silly.

Im shocked they talked to you without your fiance calling in! But good news.

Id rather a Dr in the US then in Canada myself. Especially for an urgent issue that I dont want to play the waiting game on!

So I spent the whole morning on the phone. Looks like they can enroll me in the Tricare medical insurance as soon as we are married. I have 100% coverage with no pre-condition limitations. They just have to issue me a temporary enrollment card until I get a SSN.

That's good news. Good luck with everything.

Do you know if they asked you anything about medical conditions at the interview? Do they just assume everything is fine if you passed the medical?

They asked me about my health insurance at my interview. The immigration doctor seemed to think I had a heart murmur, and told me to go get it checked out. At the time, I didn't think anything of it since she said it was really minor but i did go to to my family Dr., she checked me out and said that I did not in fact have a heart murmur so I completely forgot about it after that.

At my interview they asked me if I would have health insurance in the US and if it would start right away. My husband works in HR, and had worked it all out and was there with me, so he answered yes I would be covered asap and she was fine with my answer.

It wasn't until later that I realized she was probably asking me about health insurance because my medical was probably noted with a heart murmur.
