I-485 Interview notification letter MISSING

Hi there,

Any advice/experience on the following I would love to hear:

I recently input my Receipt number at uscis.gov to check the status of my I-485 application (I'm Canadian with an American husband, applying for green card, and we're at the point where we are just waiting for the interview appt.) and it said they mailed the letter to notify us to come in for an interview... The problem is nothing has arrived in the mail yet. The site said they mailed it June 27, and that our interview is scheduled for July 28th, but of course all the details (what time, what to bring, where - although I'm assuming the latter is downtown NYC where we're based) are on the mailed document, and of course we have to bring the actual letter with us to gain entrance to the building even (at least I think we do?).

I called the USCIS information line and after the usual runaround was told by an agent that I have to wait 30 days for the letter, at which point I can call back and they'll take action. But, I said, 30 days will be the day before the interview date...? She kept repeating this instruction - needless to say, offered no real help. I've made an Infopass appt for next week to actually go in and speak to someone and explain the situation and HOPEFULLY just get a duplicate letter, but at this point I know not to get my hopes up for this.

I guess my questions are: has this ever happened to anyone out there; what happens if you miss an interview appt; what could I expect to happen if the letter never arrives and I have to call USCIS for another (i.e., what would the turnaround time be for a new letter?).

This is all deeply frustrating... any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!

Missing an appointment is a bad idea. They will send a Notice of Intent to Deny. I would schedule an INFOPASS appointment and explain the situation - hopefully they can print a new letter for you right there.

Is your name on your mailbox? You could also inquire with the post office and make sure that they are delivering your mail (sometimes they won't deliver to someone whose name is not on the box - they assume it's misaddressed). Good luck.

AOS for my husband

Just in case this happens to anyone else... here's how this ended up:

I made an Infopass appt and was lucky enough to get in before the interview date (that was listed online on uscis.gov timeline connected to our receipt number). After an hour or so of waiting in various lines we got pushed upstairs and spoke with a supervisor who looked up our appt time and gave us the info about what to bring. She also gave us her name/extension number to help us get in the building on the day of the interview, because she couldn't give us a duplicate letter since the file hadn't arrived in NYC yet.

So... DON'T bother calling USCIS hotline - in our experience we got the runaround four separate times (each time telling us to wait 30 days before they would submit a service request). Go in and see someone. I don't think they want you to miss an appt anymore than you want to miss an appt. Just creates more headaches all around.

But also - this whole ordeal is a good reminder to monitor your case status online; to have a sense of what's coming up and, using the timelines on this website for instance, when to expect them to happen. If I hadn't checked online by chance one afternoon, I wouldn't have known our interview was scheduled. Be proactive!

Anyhow - our interview is next week!
