What if he would've kept it? What's the cash value of a ball, anyway?

So this is the new, "you disagree with me therefore you cannot possibly comprehend what I'm talking about?"

I don't think I like it so much. Please go back to your other style of not answering posts while simultaneously attempting to insult.

ZING!!!

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I don't believe the ball itself would be taxable, although if it were appraised and declared a gain of sorts then IRS may have a say- one with obvious disagreements from us in the peanut gallery.

As for the rest, find a bag of lemons and bite hard.

Staying on topic, had he rejected the 'prize', no taxes would have been involved... or the Yankees could just have invited him to the clubhouse as a regular spectator. Problem solved.

The ball can only have any value in a transaction until then the IRS can do nothing since there is no taxable gain. The Yankees could have engaged him to keep C.C. Sabathia away from the buffet table. rofl.gifrofl.gifrofl.gif

Or the federal government can just keep their nose out of it.

Seen what congress has been up to lately? They're trying Roger Clemens (a former pitcher, and one of the best to ever play the game) for perjury. That's a brilliant use of taxpayer dollars right there!

If they wouldn't do stupid ####### like that, perhaps they wouldn't need "prize money."

They could do that, and they won't. Prize money is treated as income for a reason.

As angry as it makes you, deal with it.

If he entered into a contest to win some prize money, cool. But he didn't. He caught a ball at a baseball game.

Not even the same ballpark.

Indeed, which is why the ball itself is probably not taxable, but its sale is. As has been explained before.

When did he sell it?

Its sale is taxable. It hasn't been sold. He isn't taxable for the baseball. Try again.

Then how can he be taxable for anything?

Read the story.

You're getting really good at this!

It's like you're posting but not really posting all at the same time. Way to go! Way to not take a vested interest in anything yet waste time all the same.

Modern America would be proud!
