I've got a couple of questions about applying for the social security number.

So I know you fill out form SS-5 and you take your passport with the I94, do you need to take anything else to the Social Security Office?

Also, on the form. I assume for my parents I leave the boxes blank where it asks for social security numbers, as they dont live here.

And on question 5, as a K-1 visa holder what do I put. Legal Alien allowed to work? Or something else, and do I need any extra evidence to back up this part of the application

Many thanks

Legal Alien allowed to work, for parents SSN I put N/A.

bring marriage certificate and ID other than a passport like foreign drivers license. When I was there they required 2 forms of ID, passport counted as 1.

If you are married take marriage certificate other wise make certain you have two seperate forms of ID, proof of age, and immigratioin status. Your foreign passport with the I-94 with at least two weeks before it expires is one document that provides proof of age, ID, and immigration status. SSA seems to be requiring a second document now. When we applied back in January, Roza's passport was all that was required. Things appear to be changing. I would take the certified copy of your birth certificate with translation, passport, and any other ID if you have one.

If you try to get your SSN after marriage, please do not let them tell you that the K-1 is no longer valid and you have to wait for the GC. You can tell them that the K-1 is no lnger valid once you entered the US as it is good for one entry only. The I-94 is the document you are using for lawful presence. Once married and it expires you are then out of status until the GC arrives, but you are legally in the US. Some SSA people do not understand all that and will try to deny you a SSN if you try to get one after marriage on a K-1. You have two options 1) ask for a supervisor, 2) leave and come back and apply without mentioning the marriage. The whole applying before marriage or after is only for the women that want to cchange there lastnames to their husbands. The men usually do not have this problem.

Good luck.

Dave
