My fiance' (now husband) came over from Canada on a K-1 Visa on June 30, we got married last week and I need to go change my name with Social Security, I was wondering if we need to get his SSN issued or do we wait?? Will it be mailed to us and do we need a SSN for him when we apply for AOS?? When he applied for his K-1 visa there was a box he checked on the 230 form that said he wanted them to issue a SSN, I was hoping for someone else here who had done the same and what the results were.

Any information would be appreciated!! smile.gif

For a K1, he will need to apply for a SSN personally.. Bring birth certificate, passport with I-94 (must still have at least 14 days on it) and you must also complete an application form which you can download or fill up there when you get to the office.. :)

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png

Go and get your cards on the same day! Its a big enough hassle to have to go there once =) We didn't need his birth certificate, just the passport with Visa and I94. You'll need your marriage license for your name change. I just went last Friday the 1st and received my card today.

One of the main reasons you want to do his now is so that you can open a joint bank account. They also ask for the number when you file AOS if you have them..

the box checked on the DS-230,

was in Part II

K-1 visa 'pursurers' never, ever fill out Part II, as it doesn't apply to them.

Trust me, anything put in Part II was summarily ignored.

now, as far as getting an SSN -

A K-1 visa holder has a timewindow in which to get a SSN - it's

14 days past the POE date (this gives CBP folk enough time to enter the entry, SAVE database is updated via BATCH)

to

14 days prior to the I-94 expiring.

Go in person in that timewindow, to a SSA office, show passport, ask for SAVE database look up on both A# and VISA NAME (in case CBP mucked it up in the SAVE database with a data entry error, causing a typo)

and if found, apply for SSN. (If not found, come back in a week, try again, if still not found, get to CBP secondary inspection / deferred inspection office local to you, you've a problem to fix face to face with the entry record, CBP human made a mistake at POE)

Come back the next day, SSN will be available, you can get it, face to face, then

wait for the card to arrive in the mail.

Good Luck !

Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Yeah, they asked for mine because they wanted to verify the spelling of my name and parents names.. I guess it depends how "normal" your name is :)

You can wait for an SSN for him but it will never arrive unless you apply for it at the SSN office.

Go down and apply for the SSN.
