Hi Everyone!

Someone was mentioned before as the SSN Expert of sorts on VJ but I can't seem to find the thread on that nor anything that talks about a B1/B2 visa adjusting status and applying for SSN first time. I saw K1 and CR1 SSN concerns. Anyway here goes:

I went to SSA today to get my SSN. I was hoping to get the number at least prior to the actual card as some of us here got the SSN the next day after applying?! The SSA lady said since this my first time I have applied for a number , SSA can't be give the number to me prior to the actual card sent on the mail. I jst have the wait for the card within 2 weeks she said.

I have a job offer and I just need the number so I can start working. I also need to get my state ID and DL so my USC husband can inlcude me in his auto insurance for our July 25th interview. If I can't get that number within the week, we won't have the auto insurance policy in hand on the July 25th interview.

On AOS interview documents: Next, the life insurance policy agent today said they can give us a letter for the interview if the life insurance policy we got last week won't be in hand also...now am worried cuz on the interview we will only have the joint bank account and internet/water billls, IRS transcripts (2008-2010), his pay stubs, letter of employment as proofs of a bonafide marriage (plus of course marriage license, birth certificate, cards and pix). We don't have a health insurance either cuz he just went back to work in May from a 6 month unemployment so we are just catching up on the bills that piled up through the months. That's why I NEED to start working. Like I said, I got a job offer already.

Now back to SSN, do I need to go back there and ask for the manager? How had some got the number sooner than the cards?

Sorry, venting out...hope everyone's having a better week..I know I know..I should count my blessings..we didn't have any lawyer assisting us nor had any major problems really...well, until now..that we're close to July 25th!

Thanks in advance for your replies!

re: SSN -

if you are 'allowed' to apply (ie, you hold an EAD or greencard)

then you can return to SSA office the day AFTER you apply, they can tell you the #, face to face.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Hi, Darnell!

The kind SSA Lady asked for my EAD and passport only and she even said "ok you're E-verified! Wait for your card in 2 weeks through mail". I told her some people I know got their numbers the next day. She said "nope since this is the first time you're applying for a card". In retrospect, I thought, everyone applies for a NUMBER once, right? I mean you get the same SSN even when you go back there to change your maiden name to your married name..in my case, I decided to use my maiden name and it has been consisent so far in all the documents I have.

Appreciate your immediate reply. Was that based on your experience? Don't all SSA offices across the US of A follow the same procedure?

Have a good one!

Show up tomorrow, you should have nice surprise waiting for you.

SSA clerks are braindead, is about even-stevens with the IRS folk you talk to.

which is

about 11 times worse than any USCIS SERCO contractor.

Across the USA, there are nuggets of gold, those SSA employees who have been properly trained, know their sh|t, and can facilitate a speedy SSA application without going through the 30 day 'USCIS verification process'.

It smells like you found a competent human - be sure to bring some brownies tomorrow when you show up.

Yes, the SSA Lady appeared to be efficient and knowledgeable of her stuff..now I pray she and I be surprised tomorrow when my number will show up in her screen.

Thanks again!

A word of warning if you kept your maiden name. The card may have been mailed to you and the wonderful USPS employee decided that you do not live at that address and returned the SSC to sender. This might happen unless your name is on the inside of the mail box. Not a problem if the lastnames are the same. Might be a problem with different last names. It happened to us. Several letters addressed to my wife were returned as she is using her maiden name. The cleck at the postoffice asked me if her name was on the mailbox. Forget what their website says, as a USPS employee can write return to sender on a letter and off it goes. I was sure mad about that. So make certain your letter carrier knows about the new person at that address.

Hi Darnell!

Yes I did get you!lol! And no brownies til I get my first pay stub!..lol! Wait, wouldn't that pose as a possible conflict of interest?

Went there with hubby with the printout of VJ messages saying it CAN be done. The 2 SSA girls wouldn't badge, said that was my first time to apply so I gotta wait. Hubby asked them if this is a federal or state process since they said if that happened in Chicago or NY, not here in IN cuz this is a University town,etc..they didn't want to "make an exception" for us. We said we didn't want to either but if other SSA Offices in other states did that then they can?! They said they will refer us to the Supervisor who was out (that was about 3pm) so she asked for the VJ printout, SSN application receipt and our number so the Supervisor could give us a call. My hubby said that just gave us an idea that it CAN be done. So we hope the Supervisor will give us a call tomorrow. Will keep you posted.

Sorry just replied was out the whole day.

Appreciate your email.

Yes that's the thing..how hard can it be to hit a computer and look it up?!!!ugh! It is not a criminal offense to give out a SSN by an employee of SSA to the concerned applicant, is it? :)

Yes, if we don't get a call in the morning..we will go back tomorrow. What else could be say to make them hit the computer?

Thanks, Darnell!

i say not wait for the call, at all, just go.

supervisor (or any other employee) cannot give it over the phone, anyway.

Ok, NO BROWNIES! Ever.

We got the Supervisor in person explaining a security alert will be sent to DHS if they give me my card and they need to investigate..why a number was given by the SSA employee to an applicant. They were also kinda defensive with all the complaints and requests they have gotten about their services....oh, there was another reason: Indiana is not a port of entry and not like NY or Chicago SSA offices (but they acknowledged that they follow Fed regulations...cuz my hubby said if other SSA offices give it within 24 hrs why can't you?" :)

Bottom line, we got BS. They said to call them though if on Tues next week we won't have the card. They also offered to help with BMV (or DMV for other states) so when I apply for the DMV/BMV on Tues without a card they can call the Supervisor and attest to our application for SSN...this was the 3rd time we drove there in 3 consecutive days (it's 25 mins away from us) in 100 degree days, after hubby's 12 hr shift 7 days/week..told them I wanna start working asap to help with the bills and that our interview will be on July 25th, no insurance yet cuz no SSN. I know we cud have BS'ed back but I chose to let it go...after 15 mins with the Supervisor and the SSA agent who initially assisted us...will wait til Tues..they dont want hassles/inconvenience..am tired of BS...it should come on Tues. Maybe I need a lesson on MORE patience. We have been blessed with good timelines so far...so this thing with SSA shud happen on time too. Sigh!

Not totally happy but some things are not within our control...chose to manage my attitude toward this instead.

Thanks!

Hi prep.mac,

as i have been reading too, the immigration would understand if you don't have a lot of financial co-mingling or other evidences for newly wed couples. we went to BMV 3x already and even was able to talk to the Corporal and he really didn't let me take the written exam for DL.i showed all my evidences, even the SSN and EAD but they refused us. they just based it on my I-94 ( which is already expired) and from the time the USCIS received the forms which has 7 days gap. i have been 7 days out of status when the USCIS received the packet. from going 3x and refused us, i just told to myself not to stressed about it.he can't include me to his car insurance bec i don't have a DL. our lawyer even told them that they are "idiot" lol =) because they are not aware much of the immigrations. Anyway, let me know what's gonna happen on your interview. Goodluck to us! =)
