Interesting. I had no idea that truck drivers were in such high demand that they needed recruiters.

Are you kidding?

Truck drivers are the backbone that keeps America moving.

And it's a job most can't/won't do, thus the high demand.

And good pay.

Yes, good pay is true for any job where demand outstrips supply.

Be smarter, be stronger, be whatever, just don't be like everyone else... if you wanna make money in this world.

Skin color is a great place to start! Be different from everyone and be guaranteed a good job!

Jobs you can get for just being black aren't what I'd call good jobs but your definition may differ.

Kip can help us out here, but it's been my personal observation that "hard jobs" don't tend to get many takers for affirmative action. The vast majority of folks that get their foot in the door because of white guilt don't stick around too long because of all the hard (and dangerous) work necessary to make it in those particular jobs.

Believe it or not, people who work well in career fields like trucking and iron work, construction, etc., very seldom need AA to get their foot in the door. Typically their work ethic is enough to earn the respect of their co-workers.

I know that sounds horrible that someone should have to earn their way through a career, but believe it or not, it works quite well without any government programs in the "hard jobs" of America.

Interesting. I had no idea that truck drivers were in such high demand that they needed recruiters.

To be honest most companies have huge turnovers and they need to recruit constantly to try to get bodies in the seats. When a truck sits it is making no revenue. Freight constantly has to be moved around from all points and they haven't invented the machine yet that can with a push of a button have things delivered. When you go to a store and see rows upon rows of well stocked goods then try to see how this happens. No matter what it is it has to be delivered by somebody. It is estimated that if trucking for some reason just quit that the shelves would be bare in less than a week.

One of the reasons for the huge demand is that many go to the many truck driving schools and get their license but most quit within 6-12 months. Also many that go to companies think the grass is greener elsewhere and jump companies often. It is a revolving door. Very few actually make it for long on the road. There is constant pressure to go here and there at certain times. Schedules are tight but of course we have nature to contend with and myriad laws we have to follow. We are under a microscope by our company safety departments and highway patrols that daily I have to come in contact with in one way or another. One small mistake can mean a huge fine or even an accident where people are harmed. Most accidents are not the fault of a big truck so we constantly have to watch for others. We have GPS on our trucks to monitor not just where we are but it records every function (breaking, speed, etc.) and sends the info to our companies. We are constantly looking for places that are safe and legal for us to park just to take a nap sometimes. We all miss home too and always lonely for our friends and family. It is not surprising that so few make it out here. The only surprise is that there are a few idiots like me that love it all and stay doing it. The money is really good. The past two weeks I have tossed into my bank extra money for whatever. In fact right now I am making so much it is hard to go home but I miss my babe a lot and she just called me sounding sad and asking when I am coming home. (She was excited that I said supposedly Friday. She asked what I want to eat and I know she is going to go shopping for my fave meals. Life is good.)

Yes recruiting is huge in my industry.

Blacks are well represented in this industry.

So there was probably quite a bit of affirmative action involved in getting them those jobs, huh?

No. There was their own willingness to work that gets them the job. They need drivers so bad that anyone that goes to school and gets that license will get a chance at making it in this industry as long as they can pass a physical also and has a clean record like no felonies and DUI's.

So what you're saying is even with all that equality and "chips stacked up against them" blacks are equally represented in a "hard" career?

NO WAY!!!

And good pay.

That depends. OTR doens't always pay great, and a lot of owner operators are taking it up the ####### with fuel prices and repairs. A lot of guys eat beans and rice while their trucks eat steak. Teamsters on the other hand that drive for grocery outlets make bank. That and if your doing OTR it can be a family breaker. While the guy is driving across the states, his wife is making breakfast for the mail man...

Jobs you can get for just being black aren't what I'd call good jobs but your definition may differ.

Union electricians make $36+ an hour as do union pipe fitters and plumbers. Natives,..blacks, people of color or whatever along with women get points for being ....not white when it comes to getting into the apprenticeship. Iv'e seen people of color and women have no other experience other than working a quickie mart or gas station get into the apprenticeship while the white guy who took blue print classes, algebra classes, and had welded for years not get in for the fact they only take X amount of apprentices a year. Your talking about jobs that can pay well over a $100,000 year if the works there.

They drop like fly's. Some don't make it two weeks before they drag up. You can see it in their eyes when they are asked to do something that might get them dirty...lol. We used to make bets on how long they would last. The ones that do last are great workers and do good but they are in the minority.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."
