i'm aware of what the rate is. in 1980 i worked for less than $3 an hour. so what's your point?

Cool, thanks for answering. And in 1980 you lived on that <$3/hr wage OK? I am relieved if so, please tell that to the current minimum-wage working poor. And please spare us the 'don't drive that fancy car/don't buy bling/don't use Sat TV' since you'd have to quantify that lifestyle choice in a manner that qualifies your statements.

The reality is that, even on a modest lifestyle, a single American worker will have a tough time making ends meet on a current hourly salary of even $10/hour. So again, try flipping burgers at $8.25 and get back to us about how things go.

And then do it for $5.25.

who said it was flipping burgers at $8.25?

the fact is, some of us have worked for less than the current minimum wage. and should i work for that nowadays, it would be way below my resume.

Don't want the higher starting wage? Let the record reflect this.

The argument was clear- if $5.25 was livable, you shouldn't feel superior to the position to prove its sufficient to make a decent living. Don't dodge.

how about for $8.25 as recently as less than a decade ago, while being responsible for 55k in cash and over a dozen employees?

Did you think that was fair compensation? And if you made only $8.25/ hour then what did those poor buggers you were responsible for make?

I know what you mean, though. My first job in this country some 15 years ago paid chit. Actually it paid okay but it was a flat salary. We did 65-75 hours a week. If I would have worked as a non-exempt, I would only have had to make like $8.00 to get to my salary. Fcuking slave drivers they were. Needless to say it sucked big time but I had to start somewhere. And no, I didn't work there very long.

no, the argument was $5.25 is acceptable for flipping burgers, and that some of us have made less than that in the past. you, however, can and will make what you'd like out of that data.

some of those "under" me made about the same due to their jobs. however, i don't believe anyone made more than 8.25

Minimum wage back in 1980 was $3.10.

if memory serves me correctly, it was 2.65 an hour i made.

Not in the military.

true there.

Correct, and do you think it is an acceptable wage now? That's why I referred you to work at the nearest burger shack to find out if you can confirm this for us.

Yeah but they feed and house you and such. They even give you a gun and such to play with.

Wanna talk about low pay in the military? I remember getting 110.00 Marks a month. Day started at 5:30am and ended at 10:00pm. A half hour each breakfast, lunch and dinner. Do the math: 15 hours a day, 6 days a week - that comes to about a quarter an hour. See how lucky you were?

Yes, totally like it.

Its an easy question. Is $5.25/hr sufficient for a decent life in this country? By decent I'd define a comfortable (or cozy) dwelling, a healthy diet afforded by one's work, maybe 7-14 days off in the year to be able to visit the folks in Florida. Etc. Maybe a nice TV set, a radio, a decent car. Is it?

And we're talking only for a single person. Bring in a working spouse and kids and try again.
