Thank you to everybody who has answered all my various questions on how to obtain police records. Unfortunately, I have another one. :D

My fiance sent in his papers to the RCMP for his police record since he spend a year living in Canada. He called the U.S. embassy in Ireland (where he lives) to check up on the file to make sure everything is okay and to ask some questions. He spoke with a representative there who told him he should expect to hear back from Canada with his police record in three months! :crying: Has anyone needed this information from Canada? Did it take that long??? Our petition is at the embassy and we've been working on all the supporting documents since beginning of August.

Dear sg6

I applied to RCMP for my police certificate on July 31, 2006 and I didnt hear from them yet, yep thats right, As I heard it approx. takes 3 months to recieve police certificate from RCMP. So Its very important to apply to RCMP early.

Good Luck

Yes.. the three month timeline is typical for the fingerprint check. If you want it done faster, you'll have to go to Canada in person and get a name based check from the RCMP...

I ( the beneficiary) am in Canada... it takes less time if you are or the same 3 months..? I went down to one of the police stations in the city where I live and asked how long it would take and they said 10 days, but I'm guessing that's not for the RCMP then, just a local record check.

Can anyone clarify this for me at all? Because if it's 3 months I need to get on that right away :(

If you are in Canada you need to apply for a Canada Wide check to be done. The longest I have heard it taking is a couple of weeks, while most get it back within 3 days or so.

Now, this is only if you don't have a criminal record. If you do, then you need to get fingerprinted and yes, that can take (I think) up to 4 months.

There are many threads about this on the Canada forum. Don't worry - you should be fine.

Yeah, I've heard some horror stories of calling it in.

People get much better records from going to the RCMP or local police (just as long as they do CanadaWide checks) in person.

That being said, Craig is going to get his done next week, and we don't even expect an NOA2 until Late October-November.

Your fiance isn't planning any trips back to Canada anytime soon is he?

I went to the RCMP in Calgary. it took five minutes to get the certificate and it was free. Now I didnt have a record so no fingerprints were necessary.

I had no problems either. I went to the local Toronto Police Station, they made a copy of my wife's ID, and we received it a few days later.

Like people have said before, you just need a Canada-wide name-based check as long as you don't have a criminal record.

We just had the Canada-wide check on Toronto Police letterhead, and we were fine.

Oops Cass I'm not sure if you were asking me or not whether my fiance was returning to Canada anytime soon but I'll answer anyway just in case :)

He has a flight booked for um.. December 15th because we figured I'd just maybe be getting approved around then. But with things (hopefully) looking up for August filers he might have to cancel that flight.

If we got approved in October and he did, I certainly wouldn't complain

For someone applying from outside Canada, that sounds right. My friend from Japan who studied in Canada for three years had to wait for a few weeks to get her RCMP police record.
