You booked through a travel agent? You have to go back to the original agent.

You simply just don't show up to your flight. That'll cancel it, period. As for the money back, I've never heard, ever, that an airline will return your money should you decide not to travel on a half-used ticket. All they do is reschedule you. The only way you get a full refund is if the airline cancels the flight. So let's say that flight gets canceled due to weather or a mechanical problem, you get a full refund or they rebook you on another flight; your choice.

In other words, if you just don't want to return to your homeland, just don't show up at the airport. If you want money back, you will need to call the travel agent and get the confirmation number of your ticket; it may be printed on your receipt. Then call the airlines and check your options.

Don't ever do anything you're not willing to explain the paramedics.

Just call and cancel your flight back

http://www.delta.com/help/contact_us/reservations/index.jsp

this site will give you phone numbers

you need to find one for international flights. YOu may or many not get credit for unused ticket. It depneds on the way you purchased it.

And you were badly advised. YOu could have bought online a one way. I just did.

One way tickets are typically twice as expensive as round trip ones - see little reason to book such flight...

However trying to get a refund for an unused return will likely result with airline trying to charge customer more rather than providing refund - for a reason stated above - they'll assume ticket has been changed from round trip to one way.

Not showing up has its drawbacks, however I did that once and found Delta issuing an e-cert for the amount of full ticket price (no clue why) that I believe can be used to buy another ticket - found that looking through my Skymiles account...

Contact the airline you booked the return flight on. That may or may not be the airline that you flew on the entire trip. Typically when cancelling a leg of a trip the part that you have traveled will be repriced (one way in this circumstance). If there is a difference, a refund or credit will be issued.

Whether there's any refund or possibility to extend the return date (if you'd want to visit your family e.g. next year) depend on the conditions of your ticket. The class (letters N, Y, Q, B etc) indicate the class, and what (refund/no refund/open date/no changes allowed etc) are also indicated in the ticket.

If it's a non-refundable ticket, nothing can be really done.

But if you even in that case call in advance for Delta (or the agency that sold the ticket), and ask if it's possible to do something - give some credit for future flights, cancel, change return date etc, they may help you. If you don't use the ticket and simply don't show at the airport for your return part, no harm in that. But the airline might appreciate to know that they could instead sell that return seat to someone else that would fly instead. So for the niceness it might be possible to get something for it.

Usually the return flights are much cheaper than one way. But for anyone needing an one way ticket, I'd recommend doing enough search for all flight options. See for departures of other big cities in your country or close to it, check all flight companies operating etc. I personally use http://matrix.itasoftware.com for flight searches (if you fly from outside the US, change the city of sales, and look anyway for one-way options), and then book directly via the airline. I've been able to find some reasonable one-way tickets in the past (at least on AA), however you will usually have to show that you can actually use the one-way ticket only (by having a visa that allows you to do so, a green card etc), whether then using an agency or website.
