German automaker BMW said Tuesday that it would begin distributing the world's first hydrogen-burning cars to selected users in the U.S. and Europe next year.

The cars are 7-Series sedans powered by 12-cylinder internal-combustion engines capable of burning gasoline or liquefied hydrogen.

[...]

Users, who would not be charged for the cars, could include politicians, celebrities, drivers in corporate fleets and members of the public. Some would receive the cars for prolonged periods, others for short test drives.

"If President George Bush said he wanted one for the next two years, we wouldn't say no," BMW spokesman Andreas Klugescheid quipped.

[...]

BMW was still "very far away from mass production" of the Hydrogen-7 but wanted to put the cars in use to gather real-world information.

Nice idea, a few problems need to be addressed.

  1. How are they going to generate the hydrogen? It takes electricity to make Hydrogen, which will need more power plants, so I hope the new power plants don't run on fossil fuel.
  2. How about a way to distribute the fuel, as we all know availability of E85 is still restricted I own a flex fuel vehicle but probably wont run with E85 due to the cost per mile being much higher than Gas.
  3. When Hydrogen becomes available will the cost per mile be less than gasoline?
  4. The cost difference had better be small considering cost per mile, and ticket price for the car or no one will buy.

About electric cars, the same applies, how is the electricity being generated? Burning fossil fuel to run the electric plants is not the answer, it will take a more efficient source of electricity to either make electric or hydrogen cars feasible. The "N" word seems to be taboo for generating the electricity in the USA.

Just my thoughts.

Yes, nuclear power is the answer.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
