You would be surprised at what type of technology there is at the moment, its more so a matter of the government to fund and support these new technologies that will be able to get the job done, if they can fund solar power and renewable energy power alot better, then it will be able to be done successfully.

And the hidden suggestion here is that they are financially distressed because they made an investment in the future? And the US is financially sound because we're investing in the past? Oh wait, we're not financially sound but we keep investing in the past regardless.

Yeah you think the the fossil fuel industry won't put up a fight to keep its subsidies and market share? The major hurdle this project will have is the opposition of the existing status quo, and penetrating the legal barriers to this type of project in so many countries. The oil folks are way ahead of us in lobbying the MENA country governments.

I would like to see this in my lifetime though, I wonder if patches of dessert will be like cell phone towers in the future? Hopefully they will be able to perfect the electric line wireless internet technology and make it part of the project.
