I didn't do a local police check, just the RCMP one, which she did right there as I waited. Took maybe 20 minutes.

Would any RCMP detachment be able to do this or do I have to go to one close by? The closest RCMP detachment to me seems to be a recruitment center. I wouldn't be adverse to driving a bit in order to get a check done on the same day, especially if I can take one home the same day. Sorry for all the silly questions, this is the first I've ever had to get a police check and I'm a bit lost on what to do--especially after hearing it'll take six weeks.

Call the local RCMP, and see what they have to say. Every local police/RCMP detachment differs. Some do it on the spot, some take a few days, some much longer.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

If you are in Ontario, any agencies you could give us the name of that do these checks quick?

My fiance didn't realize they would take this long and her interview is on MONDAY!!!!!

Any help at all we would appreciate!

Have you tried calling around for RCMP offices nearby? I haven't had time today to call the RCMP office today for myself, but I will do it tomorrow. The six week wait thing is an issue I'm encountering with Calgary specifically, so I'm sure you should be able to get your check on a fairly timely basis in Ontario if someone from that province can chime in with an idea.

I am in Edmonton and made my request at the main headquarters down town there. I was told 6 weeks for mine also, it only took about 3 weeks. The lady said they do not print it on the spot.

Thanks for letting me know, SunnySanDiego! I hope mine won't take a full six weeks either. I'll gladly take three.

I'm in ontario as well, and I just printed the form off my city police's website, filled in all my information and then took it to their Headquarters. They checked off the two boxes that said I didn't have any criminal record in my city or based on the RCMP database, signed it, stamped it with a seal and gave me a photocopy. Took about 20 minutes. I'm wondering if the ones that are taking 6 weeks are the police checks to work with the vulnerable population. I know those are way backed up with those ones and my sister had to pay an extra $40 to have her's rushed for her summer job. Maybe if they don't do the quick on the spot check, you could see if you can pay a rush fee.

That's what I did... went to the RCMP headquarters in Vancouver and I had the police certificate in about 20 minutes. In hindsight I should have waited as I don't have the NOA2 yet, but I thought I'd get it done ahead of time in case it took a while to get. It expires after 6 months of being issued, so at least I can go back and get another if I don't have my interview within 6 months. :)

Sooooo a question....my fiance just called RCMP and they told her as of June 1, RCMP no longer does these checks....she would have to go to a police station....she does not have a criminal record at all so it would just be one of those Canada wide name checks...

Anyone who has gone to RCMP AFTER JUNE 1 and been able to get this basic background check?

HELP!

Team Katman - was this after June 1 that you had it done at the RCMP?

I just went to the police station in my city. *shrug* They had me fill out the form and I had it within 10 minutes.

Maybe I was confused, but I applied for a C216C just a few days ago. This is for a K-1 visa.

http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cr-cj/fing-empr2-eng.htm

I had fingerprints taken (electronically) at the police station, they printed off a form and had me send it off to the address on the website for the RCMP to actually do the check. Did I only need a background check or did I need to submit the full Criminal Record Check?

I was told if you had electronic fingerprints taken it might be completed in 2-3 days. Ink prints it might take up to 12 weeks.

I hadn't heard about that! Ack. I fired of an email to the RCMP yesterday night because I'm way too bogged down with work to call anybody during the day, I will try to get a phone call out today though in light of all this confusion to hopefully get some straight forward answers. What a confusing process for what should be relatively painless for people with no criminal backgrounds.

Agreed, sooooo confusing! It definitely seems like they TRY to confuse us!

So, my fiance went down to local police this morning, basically begged them and told them it was for immigration and that her interview is Monday in Montreal....they did it and will have it set for her tomorrow!

She said people in windows next to her were asking for them for employment purposes and being told it would take at least a week or two...

My advice is to be sure to tell them it is for immigration purposes! Seems they will be more likely to help you out of that bind.

Hope my experience is helping you guys too :)

When I did mine, Edmonton told me the same thing. So I went outside to Sherwood Park, it took a week. If I lived in Sherwood Park it would be instantaneiouly. I paid like 50.00 for mine but had it within the week. Go to Okaotoks, Airdrie, Cochrane or someplace instead of Calgary.

Hey, I was wondering if any of you have tried to get the police check or police clearance in Calgary before and what I need to say to them exactly. I just went yesterday to put in a request for a police information check (that's what they called it).

I had to fill out a yellow form that asked me pretty basic stuff like my name, birth date, purpose of the request (I checked 'immigration'), whether I've been convicted of a crime (No) and when I handed the form to them, it was $30 and the woman at the booth told me it'll take around six weeks to get it mailed back to me. Which shocked me and I thought that was strange. I wanted to ask her to clarify but she was very busy and had someone itching to get whatever he needed to get done right after me.

So I shuffled out of there perplexed as to why a name check on someone with no record would take six weeks when everyone else here seems to be able to get their police clearance in a day or two unless you requested a check that involves fingerprinting. Did I fill out the wrong form? I'm going to try to call a different station later this week when I've got time, but I wanted to know if this six weeks thing is standard for Calgary, if the woman at the booth misunderstood me, or if I filled out/requested the wrong thing.

Did you go through the local police station or the RCMP?
