I received the call on my cell phone...so if it were from another country it would have had the "+" signal right? Which leaves me even more confused...what could it be??

No, I get calls from other countries without the +. Like I said before, people using phone cards.

Possibly customer service of some company (such as rental car or airline); but more of these parse to "unknown call" or "restricted call" on Verizon (or no ID on Nextel/Sprint) than to overseas numbers.

Some cases, dialing toll-free number the one who answers is overseas. Even indicating the toll-free is more common than the overseas number in these cases.

That's automatically what I thought it was-a scam...I only answered the phone and said repeatedly you have the wrong number, but I could hear my voice repeating back to me. Fortunately I didn't press any buttons or anything (not that I could understand her anyway). Verizon guy also said to ignore any future calls from this number, and that it was good that I didn't press any buttons. My statement comes out in 2 days so we're going to check at that time. Verizon has a Fraud department I can work with, and at least I notified the guy about it, so he thinks that if something bad happened I might not be liable for it. Anyway, he says, it wouldn't be money coming to them so they would have no real reason to force me to pay, but rather, they would do an investigation about it...hopefully nothing happens!

I don't think you can really tell much from incoming phone numbers these days. People use phone cards that get routed through third parties, I believe. We get calls from Italy, Spain, and Morocco that have funky numbers that don't match the country codes.

 or even calls coming without calling cards, but through cheap dialing codes. We get calls from hubster's folks in the UK that will sometimes say "Bermuda call" with a strange number after *shrug*...:lol:

one thing i've heard - if they have an automated caller that pressing a bunch of buttons screws that up :P

When I was in Mexico last month I was receiving repeated phone calls from a strange number with 12 digits. Well, last night a similar number called me. I answered the phone, and it was I think a recording playing in another language, followed by the same lady's voice reciting various numbers in English.

Anyway, Verizon Wireless couldn't figure it out, so I'm coming to my friends at VJ...do any of these numbers look familiar (like can we at least tell where the calls are originating from):

919436192649

913892349980

it is probably a card number if the caller use prepaid...i used to call my husband when i was in the philippines and the prepaid card number that i use appear on his phone...

Telemarketer....

I get tons of strange phone calls on my caller ID and all they say sometimes are Nevada, Ontario, circulation, Ironwood, I never call them back,

The funny thing was last night I just automatically reached for the phone when it started ringing cause I thought it could be one of my friends, it ended up being a telemarketer trying to sell some resort package in PHX.

Iended up talking to him and flirting around with him.

Yes, If someone calls you from overseas their phone number can show up on your caller Id..

When I get a call on my mobile from friends in India.. it does not log the + 91 is the country code. 98 shows its a mobile. depends also on what carrier it is .

I also have Verizon..

I don know tho when I call Jan on my mobile.. direct.. even off my mobile.. there are times that on his side it doesnt even log where im calling from.. Unlike when I call him via phone card.. everytime it says a differnt number thus confusing the poor man.. sometimes he doesnt know how to answer. haha. does he say HELLO or. . Hi in other Language>> hahahah

Dont forget the outsourcing that many telemarketing and other companies are doing....... ..

Not only INDIA is being used... ..

And side note on do not call list..... I am on that .,for work home and mobile .. doesnt help...!

I did some looking around on this and from what I've found it's most likely a call from someone with VOIP service.

IMO it definitely is from India or is being routed through India. When Sujeet's family calls it is also a 12 digit number, and always starts with 91 as it's India's country code. Sometimes it has a "+" in front, but it doesn't always have to.

Well, I dont think it is neccessarily from India, since the area codes after the 91 have nothing in common with the area codes in India, did check on that.

But let's see, could definetly be a VOIP service, I would agree with that, since I get that sometimes too, or from a call centre using VOIP service, I should know, I run one of these call centres here. Many times on calling from VOIp services one can get that kind of a number, and espeically since an automated message was played afterwards, makes me think so even more so, whether its a scam or not, I guess it depends on what the aumatic voice was saying.....And considering its a VOIP call, it can originate from any place in the world, not necc. India, the 91 notwithstanding.
