When I was in Mexico last month I was receiving repeated phone calls from a strange number with 12 digits. Well, last night a similar number called me. I answered the phone, and it was I think a recording playing in another language, followed by the same lady's voice reciting various numbers in English.

Anyway, Verizon Wireless couldn't figure it out, so I'm coming to my friends at VJ...do any of these numbers look familiar (like can we at least tell where the calls are originating from):

919436192649

913892349980

When Javier calls me from Mexico it shows up weird too. But it's always 10 digits. I have never experienced a 12 digit number, and the guy I spoke to last night says he has never heard of it either...

Dialing a 9 is usually how people exit their internal phone system to get an outside line... the 1 following it is the long distance indicator... the next three digits are the area code, and then the phone number.

Interesting theory, Jen. The Verizon guy's theory was that the first two digits are a country code...in this case, he said 91 is the country code of India...

In Ecuador.. 9 designates Cell carrier. but that would be reversed though.. 531(country code) 9(cell) plus the numbers.

can check here though and see if a countyr code looks familiar.

I don't think you can really tell much from incoming phone numbers these days. People use phone cards that get routed through third parties, I believe. We get calls from Italy, Spain, and Morocco that have funky numbers that don't match the country codes.

when my wife wouod call from Spain, she would use a calling card. I used to get the same numbers, but I thought they were the number of the calling card that she was using.

I finally got rid of the never ending money drain. I called the plumber, and got the problem fixed. I wish her the best.

If it is from India, the numbers (on cell phones anyway) usually have a "+" in front of them (I guess this indicates overseas; dialing a "+" first does NOT enable you to dial overseas with cellphone).

On a land line, it may not display the "+".

I know these are NOT North American (I checked them on 411.com using reverse-area-code).

Yup... there goes my theory. 943 is not a valid area code in the US. Should have checked before I posted.

Sounded good anyway. :P
