Sorry, work in a NICU - had to fix this. (Not intending to be a part of the battle.)

Week 5

Baby: Your embryo still hasn't grown much. It's about 0.05 inches long. Heart, brain, spinal cord, muscle and bones are beginning to develop. The placenta, which will nourish your baby, and the amniotic sac, which provides a warm and safe environment where the baby can move easily, are still forming, too.

Week 10

Baby: Congratulations! Your baby is now officially called a "fetus." It looks a little like a medium shrimp, measuring 1.25 to 1.68 inches from crown to rump, and weighing a little less than two-tenths of an ounce.

Oddly enough they canceled the plans for a new mall by me due to a certain slug being found inhabiting that area..... not sure how long they were.

No joke, had to read this a few times to make it click. (And maybe I'm still being a blonde and am all confused.) Lol. I wasn't saying size isn't important. Every day of the little life matters. :) I was just correcting the timing/wording. That the embryo had a heart ~4/5 weeks and was considered a fetus ~10. That's all. :)

So everyone's wrong then? Ok

Not trying to sound snarky, but are you a doctor? Can you explain why doctors can say that it beats 18 days after conception, if they're wrong?

No, I'm not a doctor, simply an assistant. The neonatologists have a crazy life, don't think I'd want to spend 24hr days here 2-3 times a week.

http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancycomplications/earlyfetaldevelopment.htm

5 ½ to 6 ½ weeks is usually a very good time to detect either a fetal pole or even a fetal heart beat by vaginal ultrasound.

This site simply states when most individuals will find a heartbeat. (Not many women realize they're pregnant until 4/5 weeks anyway. Generally, during that first ultrasound is when they search/find the heartbeat. Ya know?)

--------

Not trying to be rude, but I did read portions of that article. But... this stuck out...

'sometimes as early as 18 days after conception' --- Not all doctors will agree on the 18 day rule. Plus, that's a news report. :( And sometimes, those aren't the best sources of information.

I guess it really depends on how fast the baby grows. They are all unique. :) For that article/study, they could have found ONE baby whose heartbeat was detected at 18 days. Ya know? Ohio is basically saying, one cannot abort after the heartbeat is detected. Again, not everyone is agreeing. SO... Michelle could go 4 1/2 weeks without her doctor noticing a heartbeat. Carly could go 5 1/2 weeks. Janet could be 3 weeks. It varies from baby to baby. Ohio is simply saying... Carly can abort before 5 1/2 weeks, but Janet has to do it before she's three weeks. Ya know?

So there is a case of a heartbeat at 18 days?

So there is a case of a heartbeat at 18 days?

I personally do not know the answer to this. However, one would assume that the doctors from Ohio found at least one case where a heartbeat was found after 18 days. I don't think Ohio would be able to pass that law (based off of facts) if they didn't have the data to support the case.

---------

Just know, in any medical study (or ANY study for that matter), the results do not reflect EVERY individual in the study. They can say, 'taking this drug leads to brain tumors' but we know not EVERY person who takes the drug will end up with tumors. That being said, not EVERY baby in their study had a heartbeat after 18 days. Like I said before, ONE could have had that specific result, but it still gave them (the doctors) grounds to say what they found (18 days).

---------

If you requested the actual study results, most cases would probably show detection of a heartbeat at a later date. This is because (as shown in my previous posts) most babies don't show signs of heart development until around 35 days. However, each baby grown/develops differently. I'm definitely not saying that it isn't possible, surely it is. I just don't think that their results reflect the majority of pregnancies. I am willing to admit that I could be wrong - but most research will agree.

Plus, that's a news report.

No, it isn't. CBN is NOT news. Unless you consider a report that

was the result of Haiti having made a pact with the devil and other such marvels of "journalism" NEWS. These guys are worse than the paranoid freaks over at World Nut Daily. Bottom line: CBN is nothing other than Pat Robertson's personal money making machine. It's how Pat Robertson lawfully robs the severely gullible. But it has absolutely nothing to do with news.

Okay - so maybe I was wrong and it isn't a news report. However, when you read it, they still say, once a heartbeat is detected, abortion becomes illegal. They do not say EVERY embryo has a heartbeat at that stage. That's basically what I was pointing out.

I know what you're trying to get across. Just wanted you to be aware that the only source presented here to counter your quite valid point that there is no fetal heartbeat at 18 days - and that there is in fact no fetus at 18 days - is not a source that anyone of sound mind would consider taking seriously.

Ahhh - blondie just realized you were not defending. Haha. I didn't read the Haiti story. Probably would have made things click sooner. Thought you were making fun. :) I get it now. Oops. Sorry. :)

...which is precisely why I posted a news article, btw.

ok, so a baby can have a heartbeat at 18 days old, that's what I thought.

Thanks for all the info!
