Polish lawmakers move closer to blanket abortion ban

Polish lawmakers decided Friday to press ahead with work on draft legislation banning abortions altogether, even for women who were raped, are carrying deformed babies or face health risks. The parliament of Poland, which already has one of Europe's strictest anti-abortion laws, dismissed a bid by a left-wing party to drop the law project, instead sending it to a committee for further work.

The draft had been submitted to parliament by anti-abortion activists, drawing support from about 450,000 petitioners from the conservative opposition as well as a rightist, liberal party in the ruling coalition.

Abortion is outlawed in Poland except in cases when pregnancy results from rape or incest, poses a health risk to the mother or if the foetus is severely deformed.

But even under such conditions, hospitals are known to refuse abortions.

Illegal abortions can be punished by up to two years in prison for those who perform them, while the women themselves are not liable.

Polish women's rights group say there are up to 180,000 illegal abortions in Poland each year, while official data indicates just hundreds of legal terminations annually.

I am torn on the abortion issue, but the justification of finances to have an abortion is not a valid one, imo. One could always give the child up for adoption.

I'm not sure I get this statement. Are Polish women's rights groups typically anti-abortion? This kind of seems like a statement that would support the move to ban all abortions to me. Maybe I'm just taking it wrong. Or are they making this statement in the way women's groups in America used to by stating that the existing restrictions already result in unsafe, illegal abortions? IDK.

I am not one to support a law that dictates to people what they must do with their bodies, but I always wondered...IF the rule is about the sanctity of life, how is a child conceived of rape any less sacred? Is it about the child? I mean, even if convicted of the rape, the rapist will not be killed, why should the child be killed? Is the child guilty?

I would be more inclined to kill the rapist and let the child live. But I wouldn't put my morals on someone else.

Not true. They are usually pro-abortion, rarely pro-choice.

That's crazy. Outlawing abortion completely will only create more problems and health risks by pushing women to the backstreet butchers ( again).

Ahh yes, the old "rape" canard.

It's a handy piece of leverage to continue the slaughter.

Oddly enough there will be greater concern for those few actual rape cases than the multitude of healthy unborn babies, destroyed for no higher reason than convenience.

No one said rape was a myth..... the idea that anything but a tiny fraction of Abortions are from the result of rape.... is the myth.

THe use of rape as some reason why abortions need to be available (on a wholesale level) is whats inauthentic, not the fact that rapes do happen and in some few cases a pregnancy do result.

Most abortions are done for convenience. If you are gonna have a baby have it with the right person and at the right time. Accidents happen. TERMINATE THEM!!!!!

If backstreet butchers are the real problem wouldnt it make sense to go after them and not the innocent unborn child? Its a weak argument I suggest going back to the "woman's rights trump a unborn baby's right to live" argument.

People putting on condoms and acting responsible... happen. GIVE THEM A THUMBS UP!!!

Although I don't like the idea of a total ban as such I must admit this is the lesser of two evils.
