Maricopa County inmates have won a settlement with Sheriff Joe Arpaio over his live Internet broadcasts that showed prisoners being booked, photographed and, in some cases, using a toilet at the county jail.

The Sheriff's Office agreed Monday to pay the legal fees for the inmates, plus $500 in damages to each of the 11 who remain in the case that was filed five years ago in U.S. District Court. Arpaio also agreed to accept the court order blocking the so-called jailcam.

Only in the US...

I am starting to think maybe you guys might be right about Iraq. God help that country if it gets a US style legal system. The land where the criminals have the same if not more rights that the average Joe..

All they need is an Iraqi Civil Liberties Union..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

From the article...

Donna Hamm, executive director at Middle Ground, said the inmates all were pre-trial detainees, presumed not guilty under the law, subjected to public humiliation, with women prisoners shown partly undressed as they used a toilet.

When it's fighting for the civil liberties and rights of citizens, you can blame it on our Constitution.

i'd think being arrested and incarcerated prior to trial is humiliating but that's just me. :P

But hey, it'd make a great, 'Girls Gone Wild' video if Arpaio had arrested the Bush twins and videotaped them using a toilet. ;)

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Interesting subject. As a criminal defense attorney I am so cynical about the system and other attorneys that I hope to get out of the business soon. However, intentional humiliation of anyone just is not right.

The story that was far reaching to me was of the Hungarian defense attorney who proudly bragged that he got his client the death sentence. (around 1952). His client was found innocent in 1956.

That being said I feel bad when I feel I get the knowingly guilty repeat offender Driving While Intoxicated person off, knowing they might end up killing others or themselves.

In many ways this is a difficult world. I had a career fighting forest fire. That ended because the Federal Government was "looking for the cream of the crop, so white males need not apply". I followed my ex-wife and her career to this small town in Montana. There was no economy because logging was discontinued, even though the forest lost more timber to bug kill from 1990-2000, than they had lost to logging 1950-2000. I was unemployable. My philosophy is "when you are unemployable, become an attorney".

My point is that this country has fundemental flaws. Our criminal justice system is just a spin-off of these fundemental flaws.

I'm still trying to catch up to all the Clinton family jabs you made over the period of about 8 years. :P

There has to be viable solutions...but alchoholism, like drug addiction is a disease and their has been an ideological change with regard to crime and punishment. If merely punishing someone for their disease were to work, I'd open my own clinic and make money beating substance abusers into correcting their behavior.

hehehe...see, I knew it all along Charles. You're not against bashing Presidents per se, but you're careful to only go after the ones that begin with the letter 'C'.
