He put himself in the same hotel room with a woman he didn't know. He wasn't careful so now he's been ensnared by these rape allegations. He deserves it.

He deserves to be ensnared by what he did.... not unrelated things like... a crime.

When having sex with random strangers you risk being found out.... and perhaps some type of V.D. but being framed for a crime is beyond the scope.

Hotel maid's lie sees Strauss-Kahn released

tweet0EmailPrintUS correspondent Michael Brissenden, wires, On Saturday 2 July 2011, 2:06 EST

Former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn has been released without bail after doubts emerged about the rape allegations made against him.

Prosecutors told a court hearing they had serious reservations about the credibility of the alleged victim, who maintains she was attacked by Strauss-Kahn at a hotel in New York.

Strauss-Kahn, 62, still faces charges over the alleged attack, but the case appears to be shifting in his favour after a turn of events that could up-end French politics.

A smiling Strauss-Kahn appeared as if a large weight had been lifted off his shoulders as he left the frenzied atmosphere of the packed Manhattan courtroom, his arm affectionately draped on wife Anne Sinclair's shoulder.

Strauss-Kahn, whose $US1-million bail and $US5-million bond will now be returned, is free to travel anywhere he likes in the United States, though the authorities will hang onto his passport, pending possible trial.

According to the hotel maid's initial testimony to the grand jury, she fled Strauss-Kahn's luxury Manhattan hotel suite immediately after the May 14 attack and waited in the hallway before informing a supervisor.

But, prosecutors revealed Friday, the 32-year-old Guinean maid subsequently changed her story to say she actually cleaned another room and even returned to start cleaning Strauss-Kahn's suite before alerting her bosses.

"The complainant has since admitted that this account was false and that after the incident in Suite 2806, she proceeded to clean a nearby room and then returned to Suite 2806 and began to clean that suite before she reported the incident to her supervisor," prosecutors wrote.

In a June 30 letter from New York district attorney Cyrus Vance to Strauss-Kahn's two attorneys, Mr Vance also wrote that the complainant falsely declared a friend's child - along with her own daughter - as dependents on her tax returns in order to get a bigger refund.

Mr Vance, in his letter to attorneys William Taylor and Benjamin Brafman, said the accuser also told his office that she provided false information in her asylum application.

The alleged victim, who was born in the West African country of Guinea, filed an asylum application on December 30, 2004.

The application claimed that she and her husband had been "persecuted and harassed by the dictatorial regime that was then in power in Guinea," Mr Vance wrote.

The accuser said she and her husband were beaten because of their opposition to the Guinean regime, and her husband was later jailed, tortured and denied medical treatment, and eventually died as a result.

Mr Vance said that the complainant admitted that she made up her asylum claim by using a cassette recording of the fabricated facts that she listened to "repeatedly." "In interviews in connection with the investigation of this case, the complainant admitted that the above factual information, which she provided in connection with her asylum application, was false," Mr Vance said in his letter.

Mr Vance said that the accuser also twice told investigators from his office that she had been gang raped in Guinea, and provided details of those attacks.

"During both of these interviews, the victim cried and appeared to be markedly distraught when recounting the incident," Mr Vance wrote.

But in later interviews, he said, "she admitted that the gang rape had never occurred." According to reports in the New York Times, investigators say the hotel maid had changed her story about what happened in the moments after the incident.

They also found that the woman has possible links to drug dealing and money laundering.

'Smear campaign' The alleged victim's lawyer, Kenneth Thompson, on Friday acknowledged that his client had lied on her asylum application.

But he said the victim had, in fact, been raped by soldiers, though not in connection with the events she described.

"The mistake she made is she was afraid to tell the prosecutors that the rape did not occur in connection with the asylum application because she did not want to be deported because she's afraid of having to go back to Guinea," Mr Thompson told reporters in an impromptu press conference outside the Manhattan courthouse.

Mr Thompson said his client had been a victim of genital mutilation in Guinea and was "very concerned that her young daughter...

would also have to endure female genital mutilation." The alleged victim, said Mr Thompson, "was desperate to prevent that from happening to her baby girl." The woman's brother told Reuters in Guinea that she was the victim of a smear campaign.

Mr Thompson admitted his client had made "some mistakes," but insisted the strength of the forensic evidence would prove Strauss-Kahn was guilty of a brutal sexual assault.

"The claim that this was consensual is a lie," Mr Thompson told reporters.

"She made some mistakes but that doesn't mean she is not a rape victim." Mr Thompson said the attack was so violent that Strauss-Kahn tore a ligament in the maid's shoulder.

"That is a medical fact.

She now may need surgery for the damage he caused to her shoulder," he said.

Despite his defiance, Mr Thompson admitted fearing the district attorney's office was "laying the foundation to dismiss this case." "Our concern is that Manhattan district attorney Cyrus Vance is too afraid to try this case.

We believe that he's afraid that he's going to lose this high-profile case." Doubts over the maid's credibility mark a stunning reversal in the case that has up-ended politics in France and prompted a change in leadership at the IMF at a time of major upheaval in the eurozone.

Word that the case might implode has raised hopes among France's opposition Socialists that a vindicated Strauss-Kahn might return to help them drive French president Nicolas Sarkozy from office in next year's elections.

"It's a thunderbolt - but in the opposite direction this time," said former Socialist prime minister Lionel Jospin.

Strauss-Kahn, who resigned from his high-profile post at the world's crisis lender on May 18 to fight the charges, was ordered to return to court for his next scheduled hearing, on July 18.
