The wife wants to return to Russia

Like I said before, nothing would happen unless she secures a second passport first. I know the rules very well, so no question about that. The question was more like: "if we decided to do this, would it be a good idea?" Now I know that opinions differ.

To those who consider Russia a hole, I wonder how extensive their international travel experience is. The majority of people around the world don't have the privilege life that most of you are lucky to have here in the USA. But just because they are not as lucky, we don't have to insult them and their environment.

In terms of work, we are thinking that I could find medium term (6 to 12 months) contracts when we are here and she could find temporary jobs when we are there. However, we need to be prepared for those times when reality does not match expectations.

Your correct. I was over the line and way disrespectful with that comment and/or terminology. I apologize to anyone that I may have offended on this thread. Russia is... Russia and I'l leave it at that.

On another note, Udelhoven and ASRC Energy Services have engineering jobs available atm in Russia...and not just Russia Far East.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

So your wife is way more smarter than you? Oh wow. I speak three languages and met my wife by chance in Prague. I WIN!

I speak 4 languages and I'm way younger than you, which means that I have plenty of time to learn even more languages :P I definitely have more hair than you do, but it's OK, cause I'm a girl. No gel in my hair.

Does that make me smarter? Wow.

Having known lots of people who have done work/travel, I'd take it with a grain of salt.

I did work&travel. No, I didn't want to live in the States. I'm glad I went though, cause it really changed my opinion about the States to the better. Not to mention that I fell in love there :luv:

My plan was though:

summer 2008 - USA

summer 2009 - UK

summer 2010 - Spain.

And the USA was the first country on the list, cause it was a lot easier to get an American visa than a visa to Britain. I couldn't go to Spain, cause at that time I just started learning Spanish. Starting dating my fiance messed up all the plans and I still haven't been to neither Britain nor Spain. But, oh well, we'll catch up with my plans together after we get married I guess.

Yes, some students do work&travel cause they want to move to the States, but I think I heard that only 5% of students actually stay. I know tons of people, who did W&T, only 3 of them live in the States now (one girl got married and 2 other girls go to colleges there).

I personally never wanted to live in the States. I don't mind living there though, but I would be happy in Russia too.

Studying/working/living in the UK (especially in Manchester)... at least for a couple of years was my long lasting dream. I had to give up on that one though.

what a "real Russian woman" is.

It's me!

I am a us born citizen and I have been to cities in both Alaska and Russia. And Alaska is probably the biggest Shi*hole I have ever been to. You could not pay me to live in your shi*hole. And by the way you have probably never been to Russia. Personally would love to live in Russia someday. And seriously who meets their wife on myspace? ROFL

What is the problem with meeting my wife on MySpace, Facebook, or their Russian equivalents Moi Mir or Vkontakte?

Does doing so make me any less of a man than you are?

We actually debated living in Russia. Since she already finished her degree and I was still in school plus her being fluent in both languages led to are decision to live here. We have had numerous friends move back to Russia because they had a better life there. The difference is I met a russian women by chance who had a great life in Russia and because we fell in love is why we decided to live in the usa vs. a desperate guy who can not find a wife because of his lack of an education messing up ect meeting a desperate girl on the internet who messed up and can not handle life over there due to not having and education messing up ect... This may come to a shock to you but there are very many russian women who prefer living in Russia. Try meeting a real Russian woman. And trust me the U.S.A is not as great as you think it is.

The more I read, the more questions I have for this "expert."

Let me see ... how many countries around the world have you visited? And of those, how many have you "lived" in during more than three months? I am going to give you my answer to the second question only, because I bet that it is more than the number of countries you have "visited:" five (5).

How many languages do you speak fluently, or at least how many languages can you get by with? You are extremely educated and I am a loser, so you certainly speak more than three perfectly.

Oh! And regarding "formal" education, you certainly have your PhD already. Am I right? You cannot imagine how much I wish I had gotten such highly coveted education. Despite that, dare you compare resumes? Remember, I am just a "desperate guy who can not find a wife because of his lack of an education messing up ect meeting a desperate girl on the internet who messed up and can not handle life over there due to not having and education messing up ect..."

Try telling my wife that she is not a real Russian woman, just because we met in Internet and she was desperate to move to a country she would love to leave tomorrow if I agreed with her to move back to Russia.

Smolensk 2008. I got maced and zip tied and then had to pay the dirty f*cks (cops) over $500 just so I could get escorted to the train station and back to Vitebsk...Belarus.

Fck Russia and Russian cops. Vacation there, work there ya...but live there ...no way.

There is no way this is the whole story. Do share, please.

Why Manchester specifically? Have you ever been there?

In my opinion (very personal opinion) Manchester is no more than a very big mall.

If I decided to put up with the crappy weather all year-round to live in the UK, I would choose a place like Edinburgh instead.

Leave Spain for last, because I have a feeling that once you visit you are going to want to stay. I tried staying in Barcelona, but God wanted me to meet my wife instead, so I had to return to USA after running out of money because of seven months without a job. If I had "my job" in Barcelona, I would move tomorrow, even if my wife never gets the golden American passport that so many people treasure. :bonk:

I haven't been there, but I'm a crazy Manchester United fan. All my friends, who have been there say that it's like a fan's heaven there.

I started learning English just cause I wanted to go there. Here I am - a recent university graduate with a degree in linguistics and teaching foreign languages.... and getting ready to move to the States... Well, I guess hockey, Washington Caps and Ovi will work as long as my man is going to the games with me.

 Great advice, thanks. So, it's really dangerous for me, cause I started learning Spanish just cause I wanted to go to Barcelona (I would learn Catalan instead, but I don't think they teach it in Russia).

Span is awesome. Greece is awesome if you have money, so is Italy. There are some really nice places in Britain too. London's great if you're the city sort (my wife is, I can take or leave it and would rather be in the country), Scotland's nice in the summer and fall, and Ireland is just plain fantastic.

meh...Iv'e told this story on here before, and it's not one of my prouder moments...but by far not my worse.

Here's the short version.

Me and the wife and one of her friends went up to Vitebsk to meet her former college friends and party. It comes up in a convo that Smolensk has a new night club that's supposed to be hot. So after god only knows how much booze...were heading to Smolensk...which by train is close to 8 hours or more...drinking the entire way there. We get to the club and there's a line of peeps waiting to get in. Hot chicks, English language and a few bucks and presto we are standing in side the entrance waiting to check in the bags, coats, etc.. and pay cover charge and then get stamped. In front of us is an Arab dude with what appeared to be a hooker...not sure, but anyways they were speaking English...hers better than his. She was showing him how many Rubles to pay for the cover charge..helping him count his money...and all I said was "It looks like we are all speaking English tonight eh"...and that's when everything went wrong. She turned around and said something sh*tty in Russian to the then fiance and her friends, they said something back and then it got real loud, and he said something towards me and I picked up the words American, assh*le...and then I popped him one. Big mistake...like really big. If I owned a club and had to choose bouncers...it would be from that club. Of course I don't go down easy and without a fight. Hey it's all about representing Alaska ! :D To make a long story short, cops show up after Iv'e been maced and I'm still zip tied, I get mouthy with them, Kira tells me to stfu and get all the money I have out of my wallet if I want to get back to Belarus. I guess I paid for a police escort seeing how they followed our taxi to the train station.. :hehe:

If your an American in Belarus you need what's called a "Transit Visa" to leave Belarus and come back to Belarus. We knew this, but we also knew nobody cares about that visa...unless your a dirty fck*ng Russian cop who knows about that visa.

That was just one of many adventures with the wifey. There's the time I ended up on stage at Westworld club and she went ape sh*t and had me drug off stage ...even when everyone was cool about it..but her. Now that I think about it...she threw my bags out twice during my visits, and tried to have my trip back home changed and then found out only the purchaser can do that, so she told me to get a hotel room until it was time for me to go back...and then retracted that when she remembered the hotels in Minsk are full of hookers...etc, etc..

Most of the Russian bouncers I know spent the 90s in prison for some serious crimes and what you have in your wallet when you go to a "glamornyi" club in Smolensk would have probably fed the cops for a week. Aaand you went there after drinking for eight+ hours. Frankly, I'm surprised that's all that happened to you. I have seen some foreign tourists in bars in my day and I see them as "targets" because they're wasted and have a ton of money and are likely to buy me and all my friends alcohol and then not remember--and I'm not even Russian. Once a guy gave me 50 euros and didn't even realize it. So many people come to Russia and act like complete idiots. The Finns are especially notorious for this.

Anyone in a foreign country has to use their common sense, whether it's Russia or the UK. MAYBE in Canada it'd be ok, because everyone there is so polite. But in Russia, where most guys put in military service and in certain parts of the country, especially years ago, just walking to the store was/is an opportunity for gopniks to come and beat the ####### out of you? Yeah. Don't be stupid is the #1 rule. Follow that and you'll be fine.
