Anyone have any idea where to get a document notarized for the Visa process in Canada? It's much easier in the USA, UPS stores often do it!! The lawyers/Notary services are charging $70. Anyone have any suggestions or will I have to suck it up and pay $70?

What do you need notarized? There are sometimes misunderstandings about what is required.

Statement of intent to marry.

I'm seriously considering just driving to Buffalo, NY (1 hour plus border) and doing it there. Faster, cheaper and less hassle.

Thanks for the suggestions, I tried banks and post offices and whatnot. Apparently it's just not as easy here.

Keep in mind a notary only verifies signatures not content. For this reason it would serve no purpose to notarize the statement.

They didn't accept our last letters so for the RFE the lawyer we're dealing with (out of texas, where I am not) is asking that we get it notarized so we won't have any further problems with it.

There's special circumstances in this case that they would rather just have everything 100% kosher. We followed the lawyer's template last time, signed and dated but they didn't think it was enough. This is a beefed up version as per USCIS's request.

Off to Buffalo it is I guess. Thanks for the input, everyone!

If you live in Ontario, The Center for Education and Training (http://www.tcet.com/) has a commissioner of oath that certified my birth certificate translation for free. There's a few centers, but not all of them offer the same services- I went to the one in Mississauga. I'm not exactly sure if a commissioner of oath is the same thing, however.

You have to call and make an appointment with them if you go there.

Out of curiousity - what was the RFE for? There's a template on here for the letter of intent, I don't think I've heard of anyone needing a notary for that. I found this when I googled, perhaps it will help you locate one near you in Canada? http://www.yellowpages.ca/search/si/1/Notaries/Canada

Good luck

If a notary was needed to make these documents kosher it would be a required by USCIS along with many other things. It is not. The lawyer was wrong last time & is wrong again.

As in every case its your time & money to invest as you wish. Do you mean the RFE said the letter had to be notarized?

Most Notaries here just verify your identity when you sign a document. In Canada, that is done by a Commissioner of Oaths. Most Member of Parliament Offices and Member of Provincial Parliament offices (constituency and main office) have staff who are commissioned as a Commissioner of Oaths. Most Municipalities has someone who is also commissioned as a Commissioner of Oaths. I was a Commissioner of Oaths when I worked for the MP and we certified documents as true copies and certified signatories as true signatories all the time. We didn't charge for this service and we assisted everyone who came to our office with requests for certified documents. There may be a small fee charged by some Commissioners of Oaths - I know our Municipality charged for that service, but if you really want to have something certified - which is the equivalent of notarization here in the US - check out those locations and ask if they can help.

Most lawyers can also notarize documents. We had several in the area to whom we referred clients if they needed a true notarization rather than certification. They charged depending upon the number of pages that required notarization but it was around $15 to $25 when I left 7 years ago. Notary Publics will also be listed in the yellow pages in the telephone book.

Good luck

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
