If you want to know what is going on with your SSN application, send an e-mail to SSA:

http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/app/ask

Be sure to say you have K-1 status and include your phone number. If you have the application reference number, send that too.

Thank you I Quit, as ever you are very helpful and knowledgeable!

Tip : for security reasons the form doesn't let you send in your request with your application referral number because it won't send the filed web form with anything that looks like a SSN. Just add 1 space within the number and it'll go through.

You can also spell out the numbers. Anything to fool the system into not thinking the reference number is an SSN.

We were just at the SSA yesterday. They told us the normal processing time is ten days or less. However, processing won't start until the DHS enters the information on their end. So, if you just had an event, like arriving at the POE, or in our case, getting naturalized, then it may take a little longer. So far, we have gotten a card in the mail in less than two weeks every time we applied.

I like the streamlined processing now. Instead of filling out forms, and getting them transcribed, the clerk transcribes the information directing during the interview: Cuts down on paper, and useless effort. Now if they could install a scanner and printer at each work station, the clerk wouldn't have to keep getting up to copy and retrieve documents.

That's why I have said about a thousand times, don't worry about the questions of the Form SS-5. They will enter everything into the computer based on the evidence provided and the answers to the questions they ask. The Form SS-5 is basically only needed anymore for applications that get mailed in.

Wow, just wow. I would highly recommend using I Quit's tip and email SSA when your local office is acting up.

I filed an e-request yesterday afternoon and they called me for a follow-up 5 minutes ago (and the guy had already looked into it)!!! He said my local SSA office had an extra verification step to do, which they didn't and it's probably why my application is stalling.

To be followed...
