Viet TV in the USA

I went to the Viet consulate today and saw an ad for this.

https://www.indochine.tv/

It's like a cable box that shows Vietnamese television. I think I might do it when my SO finally comes. It's kind of nice to have some home country programming here in the states. I'd rather have this than regular cable with 2 viet channels or whatever. Anyone know about this or have it already?

Man, I am totally selling this, these guys should give me a commission

That's fine, but get a regular old-fashion TV antenna as well. You should be able to pick up Vietoday, which is broadcast over the air from San Jose. I don't remember what channel it's on - 26.2 maybe. Sang is playing Socom and he's got the TV tied up.

Anyway, you want at least one local VN language channel. Your wife will enjoy watching the shows she watched in VN, but she'll want at least one US station where she can get news that isn't filtered.

You can also see a lot of different VN language channels online. Try vietpho.com.

And don't forget YouTube!

Yeah, Youtube has a lot of Vietnamese content. I'll have to see about the local channels, don't remember every seeing a local access Viet channel. You are right about the filtering. The box thing I found seems like a decent deal, I think regular cable is over priced. I watch most of my stuff online anyways, it wouldn't be for me.

Let me know when your family wants to come up for a visit

When they went all digital they added subchannels to many of the local broadcast stations. Comcast only carries the primary channels, and they don't even carry all of those. Vietoday is a subchannel of KTSF, which is a mixed language East Asian channel, but most of the shows are in Mandarin or Cantonese, with an occasional Vietnamese show. KTSF's primary channel is 26, but Vietoday is channel 26.5. There are apparently a couple of other over-the-air broadcast VN stations from San Jose, but Vietoday is the only one we can receive so far.

FWIW, I just found out about this stuff a week or so ago. Phuong's cousin told her about it. Apparently, they ditched the cable and satellite, and now only watch broadcast TV for free. I bought a $30 amplified rabbit ear antenna at Radio Shack and got it working. I also have a 40 year old busted antenna on my roof that I've been meaning to take down, but I might just put a new one up there and see if I can get the other two channels.

here in socal you get 3 viet channels from over-the-air antenna (in the 40s and 50s).

tv is probably the last thing on my fiance mind when she comes over.

Unless something has changed, Socal gets more than 3,depends on where you are though. 44.4,57. 2-57. 6,57. 8. I don't watch much, and channels do change sometimes, so it's possible I made a mistake.

you are probably right. i see my mom flipping through them at her place on the weekend watching paris by night etc...didn't notice if it was 3 or 4.

one of the funnier things i see on them is ads for cosmetic surgeries in vietnam. i guess it's very popular for USC viet women to go back there and get various type of enhancement surgeries since it's so much cheaper.

But honestly, I think it is very risky to get surgery done in Vietnam, especially cosmetic surgery, since it is not a must.

you'd think so...but for some reason ($$$$) alot of people do it. nose job, eye lift, lipo etc

a friend's sister who is 24 yrs old, about to get married and born/raised in the USA viet just came back to vietnam for a week with the sole mission of getting a nose job (accomplished).

I see a lot of advertising for vitamins or whatever. They all seem to be the miracle pill or whatever and cure everything.

Yeah, MD Herbs is getting pimped a lot on SBTN. There's also a lot of ads for live show DVD's, and nail and hair salon "spa" chairs. Guess they know their target audience pretty well!

Vietoday is cool because it's a San Jose local station, so most of the ads are for businesses in San Jose. We're about 30 minutes north of San Jose, but we go down there every week or two.

Yeah, I have seen ads for the chairs too, I have to wonder though, since nails are not doing as good anymore, how many chairs do they actually sell.

The ads for DVD I notice a lot on the pbn channel. I see ads for local services and goods too.

Vietnamese television has very long commercials compared to American television, anyone notice that?

on free-over-the-air 97w there is Galaxy 19. Aiming your fta satellite will get you 5 channels (plus 1 blacked out currently, may be coming soon I guess) including VBS-TV, Saigon-TV, Little-Saigon-TV, VTV-4, Vietface-TV, and the blacked out one being VNBC-TV. Only VTV-4 is a rebroadcast from Vietnam, I believe the others are from the States.

If setting up this is too time consuming, you may find a dealer that will do it for 200 bucks one time fee. If you have the time and like the hobby then lyngsat.com and dishpointer.com are great resources for setting up your equipment. Impress your spouse your DIY nature :D

They don't watch them for the news. They watch them for the "soaps" and the comedy shows.

Took my FIL to one of those high end hospitals a few weeks ago and they had a boat load of women getting work done... I may get some spots of skin cancer cut out when we go back in a few weeks... one thing they can say about that particular hospital in Hanoi is that they dont play around.. its all business and everyone is always on task.... ran like a smooth machine...

On the TV deal.. we use a laptop to access VN programming via the net and then I have a USB connection that sends a wireless signal to my TV via the HDMI... sound and video o the TV.. if she wants to change the channel its just a mouse click.. and its free... sometimes there are lag issues... but not often...
