Hi

I just return from aboard and my wife who was on a CR-1 visa process also accompany back and we passed through SF POE area.

My question is what do we do now, in regards to the next step of our paperwork- Green Card and Social Security Card and AOS.

When I applied her CR-1 form, I checked the area where it ask "Check for Social Security card to be issue" will she be getting a SSN card in a couple of weeks or do we have to go the Social Security Office and apply for it. The POE officer mention something about going to the SS office.

I thought if you check that area on the Immigrant visa form that I didn't have to do anything in regards to her SS card.

What visa did your wife use to enter US?

If she entered on CR1 and she had the brown envelope from her home country then they should have finger printed her and completed the rest of the paperwork.

They must have also told her how long it would take for the actual card to come in mail. SSN I have heard some ppl have got it and some had to follow up with their SSN office.

If SSA does not send a card within three weeks of her arrival, you should go to your local SSA office to see why the card has not been sent.

The CR-1 visa stamped upon her entry into the US is her temporary green card which is valid for 1 year after entry. Her conditional green card should arrive within 4-6 weeks after she arrives in the US. The conditional green card is valid for 2 years after entry. 90 days before her conditional green card expires, she will have to file to have the condition remove. Successfully removing her condition will result in a 10 years green card. After three years of marriage and three years of being a green card holder, she can become a US citizen.

You do not file for an Adjustment of Status. You don't need to do that when a person immigrates to the US on a CR-1 visa.

She got a brown envelope, and got her finger print scan again at the POE.

So I am assuming she will get it in a couple of weeks.

How bout the AOS thing, the POE told me 90 day before the 2 year mark to applied for another status change.

Is that for her Green Card?

90 days before the 2 years mark, she apply to remove the conditions on her green card. Removal of Condition is not the same as AOS. She does not need to do an "Adjustment of Status." AOS is for people who are in the US who are seeking to adjust from non-immigrant to green card holder.

green card will show up, no problem (she's a stamp in her passport already, an I-551 stamp, validates her NOW, temporary green card for 1 year)

SSN card is problematic - suggest after 3 weeks, get into SSA office, have her looked up in SAVE system by SSA clerk - if found, apply for SSN otherrwise come back later.

Receiving the SSN is problematic, as it'####### or miss in the backroom operations that handle the DS-230 packet after you hand it off at the POE. Some ppl get a SSN, others don't - so

regardless of what happens next - best bet is to get into SSA office about 3 weeks from POE date, apply.

for a really detailed breakdown on what/why - use advanced search tool, terms 'SSN SSA SAVE' click on 'show as posts' have a longish read.

I listen to one VJ member and accompany my wife through the immigrant line instead of separating to the US line at the POE. The immigrant line was empty compare to the other line as other passenger went through customs.

The POE officer was nice, but my wife couldn't understand him because he had a lisp I was able to finally understand him after a few minutes.

1. He ask for my passport and her visa.

2. He took the brown visa package

3. He rescan her right fingers

4. Open up the visa package, stamps/staple, and made her sign 2 areas of a piece of paper which he gave to us

5. Told us about the 90 days prior to a 2 year to apply for a form which I don't remember right now

6. Ask question -It seem to be as if the question were directed to me more then my wife. At one point he ask me if my wife spoke English and that's when I encourage my wife to actually talk and say something in English. I think she was partly tired and kinda of nervous. Probably because I told her she might get interview again and get sent to an Secondary exam. She did not get any of that.

7. The officer did not look or even take the X-ray film that we hand carry in the airplane. I don't know why we carried it, maybe I saw some where on VJ.

It took about 10 minutes, the hard part was finding her 4 gigantic suitcase in the baggage claim area.

Over all the POE area went well. I guess I stress out because I heard bad POE stories.

As its mentioned she will get 2 year conditional GC and 90 days before the conditional GC expires you will have to file for removal of condition and thats when she will get her 10 yr GC.

If your medical is clear then normally they dont look at the x-ray but you are supposed to carry with you.

I had asked him what am I supposed to be doing with my x-ray and he just said keep it whatever....lol.

So you are all set just keep any eye on for the SSN card and GC in mail.... it takes anywhere from 4-6 weeks.

She can get DL if interested.... based on the stamp on the passport she can get a DL just an FYI

Yep DL is Drivers Lic, I dont know you might have to check your state laws on if she can drive with Chinese driving lic.

Whtever your state laws are she might have to take written and actual test.

With respect to all the replies here but it really depends

On my case (I was a CR-1), even though I was finger printed and photographed at the POE but I ended going to the SSA office and applying for it by my self , I mentioned that I checked on my DS form that I need a SS card to be issued but I was told sometimes I need to come and do it my self. and they even established my SS card from scratch as if I didnt ask for it my DS form (being asked to fill the application , informations , passport looked at etc )

So I agree with waiting for may be 14 days Max , then if nothing go and get one by checking the SSA office (I got it after 4 days of going to the SSA office ).

I agree with Harsh

I was able to drive for ONE year on my Egyptian license here in the US (Once I was stopped by an officer and it was fine, no problem), but this is in Ohio, Check your bureau of motor vehicle website for your state
