One can't compare our generation to our parent's or grandparent's generations.

When I was 5, a family of four could go to the movies, popcorn and all for what $15? Today you are lucky if you can get out of there for under $80. All I am saying is that most immigrants aren't envisioning life as a family of four in a 2 bedroom apartment, driving a clunker, shopping at walmart, and working until the day the die. I applaud you for doing more with less... but it is not the idea that "most" foreigners envision. Personally, I believe middle-America is screwed... no jobs, no skills, and no future. It all starts with education. A high school diploma at most public high schools is worthless unless you follow that up with higher education. Money isn't everything, but it is the single biggest reason couples turn to divorce... or even worse, stay together when they aren't compatible because they can't even afford to pay for a divorce atty or maintain two separate households.

Do you really think children born in the US are going to have the desire to go live in the 3rd world country that one of their parents came from once they are grown?

To each his/her own, but you have to admit when you see over half the posters on visa journey talk about co-sponsors you have to recognize the problem facing so many in the US. The rules need to be changed. The rules didn't take into consideration the bankrupt state of the US and the alarming number of Americans that have a negative net-worth. I applaud you for being debt free. Perhaps that should be a stipulation to petition a fiance as well.

You talk a lot about money. Not everyone has the same goals, man. I personally could give a ####### less about driving fancy cars and owning a McMansion, sending my kids to Ivy League schools and the pie in the sky "American Dream". Some people just want to be happy. My father put himself through university working as a sandblaster. My mother as a typist. Thank goodness my parents and my parent's parents weren't thinking about a bottom line when they had their kids.

Interesting post... I originally met my fiance in 1964 when we were just kids. Its a long story but we are definitely qualified to make the decision to spend the rest of our lives together. There is no doubt that this process is difficult and can put what seems to be severe and unnecessary strains on both parties, both during the visa journey and especially after it. However, I don't think there will ever be a perfect answer. We (as a VJ community) are coming from different backgrounds, cultures, age brackets and have different objectives. We can only judge our own situation and hope that we are doing it for all the right reasons and in our own best interests. As with anything in life, some will succeed and some will fail. Every case is different, no two people are the same, we can only try to be realistic in our expectations for our own situation.

Mar 2011 - After 5mths denied for lost docs - Attempts to follow up failed. Mar 18 2012 - I-129F sent - No sign of NOA1 but they have banked the check...Jul 24 - Update - USCIS has located our file
Infopass Apt - they sorted through everything - our 2011 and 2012 file keep getting mixed up - getting us a Case# (still waiting) Dec- Infopass Appt- expecting to get a case # in about a week ..Still no Case number

Mar 2013 Infopass - advised file was in a box somewhere, and it would be quicker for us to refile. Life gets in the way... New petition submitted July 2014 .

Regarding income, sure some people get by. However, given that public education in the US is horrendous I'm not so sure how people expect to get out of the poverty levels if they don't make an awful lot more money. With a decent K-12 private school education at $20k+/yr and most of the Ivies running $40K+/yr and even public state universities at $25k+/yr how can one possibly even consider having kids if one does not make $50K+/yr.

My ex-husband and I split when my daughter was 5. I have raised her as a single parent. I do not make $50k+, and never have. I drive a paid off clunker. My daughter has fibromyalgia and several other health issues, which caused her to miss school often. She still managed to work hard through all of it, and graduated this year with honors and a 3.8 GPA. She won herself 2 scholarships. One being a 100% fully paid tuition at the state college here (we do not care about being Ivy league), and another which will be given to her in the form of cash so she can purchase her text books. You can still get a decent education, and obtain a degree without your parent making over 50 grand a year.

I wonder when OP's coming back to join his K1 party, or if it's one of those times where you start a sentence and..

..forget to finish it.

@'Ready to do it'

I find that if you have the right attitude, it doesn't matter if you make $18k/yr or $100k/year. If you have the wrong attitude, it doesn't matter if you make $18k/yr or $100k/year. And no, I'm not just saying that; I grew up in a household that has gone through all combinations of those factors, I've lived through all those.

Jay-Kay.... nice story, you should be very proud of your daughter. She has worked very hard to earn what she has and you have obviously provided a wonderful environment for her to succeed.

Irrelevant... attitude is everything. I'll take the attitude and the $100k option :-)

Good choice, I would too.. I was simply saying:

+attitude + 100k > +attitude +18k > -attitude + 100k > -attitude +18k

if you catch my drift.
