I don't advocate moving away from problems but if you're ineffective at changing the situation, you have to seek a solution elsewhere.

Texas is a big place - heck even in Houston area, that's 180 miles across, 8 different school districts - is not a big thing at all, to move into the right school district.

inEffective at changing the situation, on a group level (cause there's two groups involved) - I dunno, is just easier to move, get outta that tax base into another one that really gives a sh|t about the school district, as an individual. Sure, I see the 'group fail', but as an individual, IMO, you have more options.

IMO, the failure was at the group level, an individual is free to do what he/she wants. Most are unencumbered to move, those that claim to be encumbered are (IMO) too lazy to dig out and move.

I agree with moving to a better district or finding a way to send your child to a school that is better -- if it's in your power. I know that there are people who cannot afford to move or who can't get jobs near the best district, etc., but I know plenty of parents who sacrifice so their kids can be in a better district.

The problem with using test scores to detect whether or not a school is "failing," is that test scores are not a one-size-fits-all indicator. Progress in the classroom can be determined by whether or not Johnny or Susie has improved from Day 1 to Day 180 -- not whether or not he or she scores lower than kids in another district.

And, people who have never worked in a classroom with kids shouldn't be making laws about education or determining curriculum. Those of us in the classroom who STAY are there for a reason -- and it isn't the big bucks or the vacation (which is never really a vacation if we want to be prepared for the next term). Parents and teachers working together is what makes a school great, not some indifferent politician who doesn't know jack about the kids or the classroom.

Are there no private schools?

I'd bet most parents who were genuinely concerened about their child's education could influence the school (not the district, just the school) in such a way as to better thier child's education. Sometimes all it takes is a call to the principal or counselor or even the teacher. A meeting goes a long way when a parent takes the time to show their interested.

If parents can't do that, it's likely their kids won't amount to much anyway since they have bigger problems than their education.

Private schools abound in the Houston area - but that wasn't the issue with NAACP and the parents of students in the OP, right?

Nice in theory, but there's a big hooraw with the NAACP and a group of parents. I'd stay more focused on that, than the analysis of what may work elsewhere. Just saying. One of the plaintiffs is the Teachers Union, and in NYC - they have lots of pull, sometimes to the detriment of the education process and testing results.

Are you advocating we stick to the OP and ONLY the OP in P&R? Who are you?

In relation to the OP - close the schools. Why have failing schools open?
