Not that it's entirely pertinent to this conversation, but I always thought modern day common sense should be taught in school. Like how to balance a checkbook. How to read about a credit card interest rate and how it's computed. Etc. Forego one art class to teach that, or make it part of Home Ec...instead of having to sew pillows and stupid nonsense like that.

I agree though, that it's up to the parents first. But what is the answer if they are not doing their job?

I was taught all those things in school.

Forego one art class to teach that, or make it part of Home Ec...instead of having to sew pillows and stupid nonsense like that.

Sewing pillows, while unncessary, does teach a basic skill.

Art class, on the other hand, is a complete waste of time for folks like me. Once you get past finger painting, you're either artistic or you're not. I'm not. My time in art (and music, for that matter) would've been much better spent in wood shop or Latin or something actually useful to my skillset.

The answer is their kids end up pregnant, in jail, on drugs, or simply not working anyway so why waste MORE money on them?

I'm all for giving every kid a fair shot. But, I don't see the point of dumping excess money in schools where kids are underperforming and have no real chance of making a good life for themselves anyway. If you live in a sh!thole, you should come to expect a sh!t education for your children. Don't like that? Move to a nice school district. Don't want or can't do that? THEN DON'T HAVE KIDS!!!

Actually, the 'pubs give 'em quite a bit of help too, especially when it comes to things like evolution vs. creationism and making sure everyone knows Ronald Reagan was the best president we've ever had.

Bingo. It's about prioritizing one's child's education. We live where we live in the Tampa Bay area because our house is located in what is one of the best public school districts around. That was important to us - that our daughter will have decent and accomplished public schools to go to and share the classroom with children coming from like-minded homes.

I don't advocate moving away from problems but if you're ineffective at changing the situation, you have to seek a solution elsewhere.

In the case of school districts, moving is about the only option. You're not gonna change parents that don't care about their kids education.

Getting parents involved (not just showing an active interest) beyond showing interest costs money. Getting them involved @ school I mean (just in case you don't read it correctly).
