I live here...does the Washington Post? If you think over 50% of eligible voters in Alaska actually went out and voted your higher than a kite. Again most Alaskans don't vote...hence the reason we lost our free porn channels on cable TV...we didn't turn out to vote against the church nuts that pushed that bill even though they are in the far minority. Most of us are doing something else when it's time to vote. You would be lucky to find a majority in any village or town up here that could name the current governor here atm.

The WashPost got those numbers from the State of Alaska.

Number of voters divided by number of registered voters.

This is not rocket science.

I've also lived in liberal bastions like NYC and DC. I'd say people there are even less open minded than in Alaska. If you don't think as the libs in those places do, then you get beat down and shunned.

I seriously doubt that. There are lots of conservatives in NYC and I don't see them getting beat down.

When the topic turned to attitudes about gay marriage in Alaska, I know I can trust the take of someone there better than that from the Washington Post. And, having lived in Alaska myself, and having many contacts there still, I'm sure that Why_Me's take on it is more accurate than the WP. Anyone here for a while knows that I don't make it a habit to take Why_Me's side, but he's right on this one.

They should vote on these issues then.

And yet, they're usually able to track elections pretty good. How do they do that if only students and transients are polled?

Actually, it's not. Voter turnout in Alaska was above the national average in the last few presidential elections (2000, 2004, 2008).

Yes we eat up everything we read from the lower 48 rags. The same rags written by idiots that are telling us drilling in ANWR will kill off civilization as we know it. You know the peeps...the ones who have never actually been to Alaska, yet seem to know everything about it.

I call them "robots". Robots love to count beans, and eat up everything they are fed. The need it for the fact they can't wipe their own ####### without someone giving them a book of rules on how.

Can I tell you about Florida ? Iv'e never actually been there, but I can google it and pretend to know.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

**, they're actually above the national average. In 2000, national turnout was 51.3% and in 2004 it was 55.3%. So much for them not voting. Seems that Why_Me just can't get a single fact straight today. Poor guy.

Local media disagrees with you as well. I suppose The Anchorage Daily News is close enough to the state, yes? In 2008, over 320,000 votes were cast in Alaska. Seeing that your total population is only slightly above 700,000 and seeing that a portion of that population isn't eligible to vote, the officially reported voter turnout of 65.5% would appear to be right and you, again, would appear to be wrong.
