My husband and I met speed-dating in London when he was still living there. (He's a dual national, born USA but spent life from age 9-35 in UK before moving back).

Would IMBRA see speed-dating as a marriage broker????

Also, my husband proposed quite soon, after 10 months, and it became clear to us during the K1 process that we weren't ready for marriage at that time. Well, we all know how difficult transatlantic relationships are. We had some problems, spent another year together without any wedding pressure then married in June 2006. All great.

We got to the stage of being assigned an interview in London but we cancelled at that stage.

We have no "evidence" as to why we cancelled!

If we apply for a petition waiver might that impact on our i-130? Might they see us as a bad prospect because we had a wobble about commitment? Surely not.

My husband put on his covering letter that we cancelled the K1 for family reasons in order to marry in England. Not a great excuse though - we knew we'd have to marry in the US under the K1.

Filing Limitations

IMBRA imposes limitations on the number of petitions a petitioner for a K nonimmigrant visa for an alien fiancé(e) (K-1) may file or have approved without seeking a waiver of the application of those limitations. If the petitioner has filed two or more K-1 visa petitions at any time in the past, or previously had a K-1 visa petition approved within two years prior to the filing of the current petition, the petitioner must request a waiver. These limitations do not apply to petitioners for a K nonimmigrant visa for an alien spouse (K-3).

whats speed dating?
Speed dating is a formalized matchmaking process or dating system (a variant of a meeting system) whose purpose is to encourage people to meet a large number of new people. Its origins are credited to Rabbi Yaacov Deyo of Aish HaTorah, as a way to ensure that more Jewish singles met each other in large cities where they were outnumbered by non-Jews. "SpeedDating", as a single word, is a registered trademark of Aish HaTorah. "Speed dating", as two separate words, is often used as a generic term for similar events.
