Hello everyone,

Firstly, I wanted to say that it is amazing that there is so many people here willing to give information and help others. I hope to be useful to other people too.

I came under the J1, changed to F1 and was studying. Had several problems with the university I was enrolled with and asked for transfer on 02/28/2011.

The transfer was approved but the classes would only start a couple months later. Meanwhile my boyfriend and I got engaged and got married on 06/06.

I never registered for classes at the new university. However an lawyer had told my ex host mom that when transfering from one school to another students had a 5 months window where they could be "not-registered" for classes but still not falling out of status, so from that I supposed I'd be fine up to 07/28.

So I'm filing the I-485 and I have one tiny little question...

On the first part it asks the current USCIS status (which is F1) and the expiration date. That is where I'm stuck!!

Students have no expiration date. In our I-94 it says valid for duration of status. On my I-20, however it says "STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO REPORT TO SCHOOL NO LATER THAN 05/02/2011 AND COMPLETE STUDIES NOT LATER THAN 05/31/2014"

A friend of mine who just got her green card approved put that date when she was expected to be finished on her I485 and it was ok, but differently from me she didnt stop taking classes.

I'm really confused! Does anybody knows what date would be correct?

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the lenght of the post but I thought it would be easier to provide you all with the background :)

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Thank you so much to all of you guys who took time to reply...and to fix the wrong placement of my post...hahaha...sorry about that!

Now I know that I can just write or type D/S there :)

I am wondering about something else though...

Since I didn't register for classes, is it possible that I fell out of status? Is there anyway to check that? I mean if that rule of 5 months of break when transfering between schools is true I should be fine, and also a friend of mine received a letter from school warning her about her situation when she didn't register for like 2 months...

I'm just wondering if I need to fill a waiver or if it's not necessary...

Nice, Harpa!! Does that mean I do not need to submit the waiver form?

You do not need to fill out any waiver. However, you might not be able to use Advance Parole even though you will be approved for it. Wait to travel until you have the Green Card.

harpa, i've been reading this for a while now...

I never understood why some people are so dying to travel while their I485 being processed. I mean fudging can't they stay still for a 6 months or so, then do whatever the hell you want :)

If you're mother is dying overseas that one thing but I am sure half of these are just silly things like `vacation` or something.

Well, because people have different concepts about priorities in life and what freedoms they are entitled to. You, from what I remember, overstayed your visa, so you were here for many years without the possibility to go home, and that was your decision, and you were okay with that. I, on the other hand, am surprised when I see people who think they can't travel on their 2-year GCs and are content to wait in the US for years before they see their parents again. My husband had a hard time staying here while his I-485 was being processed, because he had promised his mother he would be home for some holidays and was not able to fulfill his promise. He felt very guilty about it and it was hard for him to feel stuck in one place. Some other people are stuck in their own country (cannot get exit visas etc) and they are used to living this way.

So, cultural differences are vast, even in seemingly small things like how, when, and for what reasons people should travel.
