Hi all,

I just became a US citizen and from what I see regarding passport issuance timelines, it seems like it might be another month or so to get my US passport.

My question is:

Won't the copy of the naturalization certificate be sufficient to establish my US citizenship? After all, a US citizen is NOT required to have a passport right?

I really would like to get the I-130 going and not be delayed by a month waiting for the passport to show up.

Any feedback will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Sam

No need to delay, file with photocopy of your naturalization certificate now. The worst that can happen is they request additional document and by then you submit full copy of your US passport.

But you do need to delay a few days just to triple check everything and make sure you get everything right. I see cases where they get rejected just because a signature is missing, or the check is of the wrong amount of fee. What a pity if that happens. If you could not even get a signature right how could your case files stand up for scrutiny?
