I tried to apply for a social security number last week but the guy across the desk told me that he cannot give me a SS#. He could give me one but it would reflect my maiden name and since I got married already I wanted my SSN to reflect my "married name". And another thing that he mentioned (which makes sense) is my I-94 bears my maiden name if he forced my "married" name there will be a conflict in the records between the immigration and social security.

I went to the immigration which is 2.5 blocks away from the building and they told me that I should have an approved working visa (or the EAD) and then I could apply for a social security number. Now after reading the above thread I'm confused, should I go back and ask the SS officer to give me a number? or just wait for my EAD to be approved?

Experienced AOS posters please advice! After getting married should my K1 fiance now wife apply for SSN with new last name(mine)? What about when getting the AOS package ready will she use her maiden name or her married last name?

thanks!
