So what's wrong with rings that symbolize unity? I think it's one of the best traditions ever!

I, personally, don't like the idea of bring branded in a display of ownership... whether it be with a ring or a hot iron. I wear a ring that my husband gave me as a wedding gift but it is by no means a 'wedding ring'.

Like I said, that's my opinion, which I'm free to have, just like you're free to have and express your own opinion. There is no need to start yelling at me because you disagree. (F)

Jehovah's Witnesses don't in fact celebrate Christmas or Easter, or birthdays, for that matter.

I have another christian friend as well who doesn't celebrate anything other than passover. I don't know what sect/denom. she is but I'm pretty sure she's not JW.

Sorry you feel like I am yelling, but I'm not. Like you said I am expressing my opinion. I think Marriage shows an ownership to eachother, the rings are to show that you are BOTH in a permanent relationship. I personally love the fact that I belong to my husband and he belongs to me. But it's all a matter of opinion.

I read all the !!!! as yelling. Sorry.

I don't agree. My husband doesn't 'own' me and I don't 'own' him. Slavery is illegal in most of the world. :star:

My company does not 'own' me either. I am free to leave it and look for work elsewhere at any time.

Edit: Also, when this tradition (wedding rings) began... women did not recieve a dowry... this is a tradition that Islam commanded. In those other traditions, a man would give the dowry to a girl's father (purchasing her) and brand her with his ring and name. Islam gave women the right to be people and not just property that men traded, alhamdulilah. (F)

A symbol is whatever it means to that particular culture. For instance, the swastika was a symbol of good luck in ancient India, and was common in many other cultures as well. After it was appropriated by the Nazis, it began to carry a far different meaning to most people in the modern world.

Many ancient traditions (Egyptian and other) consider the ring as a symbol of that which is unbroken, or never-ending. Thus, to many, it is a symbol of eternal love for one's spouse, rather than "ownership."

To wear or not to wear -- that is *of course* a personal decision.

By the way, the ring in the buffalo's nose is used to lead it around (once it's trained to the ring.) You will often see it on bulls and other cattle-like species. Not at all like a wedding ring :innocent: but it sure does make them look bad-###

That's cool.... it was a wedding gift.

Your marriage will not crumble if the ring falls apart.

The only symbol you need of your love for one another is the way you treat each other in your marriage. (F)(L)

I actually thought about a quote from Samuel Johnson describing a wedding ring as "a circular instrument placed upon the noses of hogs and the fingers of women to restrain them and bring them into subjection" when I saw that pic :P

there are definitely ppl who see it as ownership and some that see it as a reminder of the one they love...its ok to see differently on this situation :) just respect that others may view it differently :) .. my husband and I both have silver rings but my engagement was gold..he said women can wear gold but men can't. We looked up the reason on the internet and one of the things we found .....now this is quite humorous...but it actually said that if a man wears gold, it reduces his "sexdrive" ...how 'bout that... thought that might make someone smile today :)

Wanted to add:

So what's wrong with rings that symbolize unity? I think it's one of the best traditions ever!

I, personally, don't like the idea of bring branded in a display of ownership... whether it be with a ring or a hot iron. I wear a ring that my husband gave me as a wedding gift but it is by no means a 'wedding ring'.

Like I said, that's my opinion, which I'm free to have, just like you're free to have and express your own opinion. There is no need to start yelling at me because you disagree. (F)
